This device is a dock for external hard drives which you connect to a router with an ethernet cable, so that you can access the drives over a network or over the internet. It has two special slots which accept only Seagate GoFlex portable drives, and one standard USB 2.0 port to which you can attach any external drive (of any brand) provided it has a USB connection. There are also two LED gauges which show how full the drives are, but these only work with drives inserted into the GoFlex proprietary slots.

So far, so straightforward. However, it is important to realise that to create this device Seagate has partnered with Cloud Engines, makers of Pogoplug, and in essence this device lets you connect your drives to the Pogoplug service. This has advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage is that you get the added value of Pogoplug: you can access your drives over the internet, share files with friends, and even run an iPhone or Android app that lets you get at your stuff from a smartphone - though I found this unreliable with files of any size when connected over 3G rather than wifi. It is clever technology though and can be very useful.

The disadvantage is added complexity of setup. You have to register online with the Pogoplug service in order to activate your devices, and if you are behind a firewall (as I am) you may have to configure it to allow UDP traffic on port 4365, if this is not already open.

Once you have set it up for Pogoplug, you can enable Windows file sharing and access the connected drives from Windows, Mac or Linux without going via Pogoplug's web browser interface. You can also download an installer from Pogoplug which shows your connected drives as if they were local drives on your machine.

This took a little effort to get it working. The drive attached was not directly accessible; you had to go through pogoplus. files could not be dropped onto the drive from remote devices. After a week, the green light (indicating net connectivity) turned orange (Not connected) and I was not able to access the attached drive in any way what-so-ever. I tried all ways to correct this - it was invisible to the LAN. I could access the drive by plugging it directly into the PC, so the drive was not a problem.

I was also pretty annoyed that I had to use the USB port to connect the 1Tb drive as it was too big to fit into the two docking ports.

I have returned this device to Amazon as I was so disappointed with it. Amazon were fantastic in the returns process. Mega credit to Amazon. I would not buy this product.

Well packaged, well built product, connects very easily into existing home network.
Pogo Software is as good as any other although you do have to pay a yearly subscription for increased functionality. Nothing for free these days!

Only real grumble is the poorly named network name that I do not appear to be able to change very easily. Lots of support on the internet if you do need to do this.

I primarily use this device with a Sonos setup and no problems for me.

The fact that use of this piece of NAS hardware is so tightly bound to PogoPlug, which is mickey mouse at best is a problem.

I think if it was easy to just make this work as a NAS server, I'd be over the moon but it's too much of a chore to work around and get rid of the PogoPlug SW

I have configured this kit along with my previously purchased goflex drive, to use as a normal NAS drive to backup my laptop via a wireless network (kit attached by cable to the wireless router). I use memeo instant backup (that came with the goflex drive) and it works well. Every time I log on to the network, memeo checks and backs up my files when needed.
One minor critism is that the drive appears to be spinning constantly and does not go into 'sleep' mode, something that I am sure seagate will address in the near future.
