Product Description

The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drive offers the best combination of capacity, mobility and durability in a laptop hard drive to meet the demanding requirements of today's notebook multimedia usage models. The Momentus 7200.4 drive uses proven Seagate perpendicular magnetic recording technology to increase capacity and dependability by storing data bits vertically rather than horizontally.

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 drive offers the best combination of performance, capacity, mobility and durability in a laptop hard drive. Using optional G-Force Protection technology, this drive provides added durability and robustness in the event of the accidental drops that can occur in strenuous mobile environments. With a capacity of 500 GB, the Momentus 7200.4 drive meets the demanding requirements of today’s notebook multimedia usage models.

Able to withstand up to 1000 Gs of shock, this highly reliable 2.5-inch drive is perfect for notebook or external storage applications. When a laptop is dropped, the most catastrophic damage to the hard drive occurs when the head scrapes across the surface of the disk, causing potential data loss. G-Force Protection technology protects the hard drive against shock by sensing when the system is in a free-fall state, moving the heads off the platter and locking them in place. All this happens within three-tenths of a second when a change in acceleration equal to the force of gravity is sensed. G-Force Protection technology results in added durability and reliability during accidental drops.

I upgraded the 320MB 5400rpm Hitachi HTS543232L9SA02 drive to the 500GB Seagate Momentus ST9500420AS in my Macbook Pro (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo). Technically it works really well, no hiccups with the installation, no heat issues even when working hard, and the system feels more nippy (I use things like Photoshop, VMware Fusion etc.).

"xbench" (a free Max benchmarking utility) now reports a "Disk Test" score of 52.6 (vs. 33.7 for the 5400rpm drive). Sample xbench results show a much better performance increase than expected:

Sequential
Uncached Write 256 MB blocks: 78 MB/s (vs. 40 MB/s for the 5400rpm drive)
Uncached Read 256 MB blocks: 80.6 MB/s (vs. 41.1 MB/s for the 5400rpm drive)

Random
Uncached Write 256 MB blocks: 52 MB/s (vs. 20.7 MB/s for the 5400rpm drive)
Uncached Read 256 MB blocks: 26.2 MB/s (vs. 13.2 MB/s for the 5400rpm drive)

Unfortunately the drive is a bit more noisy than the Hitachi, the normal "disk spin" noise is not too disturbing, but the drive vibrates a lot more than the 5400rpm Hitachi. You can feel the difference when you hold the running drives in your hand, and that vibration causes resonance at least in my Macbook Pro (aluminium body) which is very irritating.

So from a performance point of view an extremely worthwhile upgrade, but be aware that this drive might come with some noise penalties, which very much will depend on your system.

Note that the drive comes in different versions and cache sizes, the more expensive "ASG" means it has shock protection, my Macbook has that built in so the normal "AS" version was sufficient for me.

NOTE ADDED 27 May 2010: I just replaced this drive with a Hitachi 500GB Travelstar 7200rpm drive, not because I'm unhappy but because I need to test disk encryption software for work and clone my drive between the tests. I thought I'd post the results here. The pro of the Hitachi drive is that it is dead quiet compared with the Seagate, no annoying vibrating "hummmmm" from it. The drawback is that the Seagate is a bit faster. xbench scores the Seagate at just about 10% faster in all it does.

Big notebook drives 24 May 2010
It's hard to see past the value of this 500GB 2.5" notebook hard drive. I still find it amazing the way storage space doubles - the drive replaces a non-functional 250GB 5400rpm Western Digital unit that was original OEM equipment. The difference in speed between a 5400rpm and 7200rpm drive is easily noticeable during boot, with Windows 7 Professional starting to a login prompt in less than 25 seconds on my system. However, once things are up and running and in everyday use scenarios, the benefits are more marginal. I'm sure this is partly due to the built-in flash cache module on my Dell XPS M1330 notebook (aka Windows ReadyBoost/ReadyDrive/SuperFetch), and party because the seek to seek times don't really improve with a higher spindle RPM.

Suummary:-

Excellent drive, backed by Seagate's rock-solid reliability and performance. No noticeable increase in noise over a 5400rpm drive, and with Vista/Windows 7 hybrid disk power savings I'd say the battery life is more or less the same as well. It therefore comes down to cost, with the slower drives saving you about £15. For a one-off purchase I'd say it's worth the extra, although you can understand why OEMs generally go for 5400rpm units, wanting to make that saving in parts costs.

I was originally planning to rate this review at 4 stars due to the high price, but it is a 5 star product in reality that you have to pay a little premium to get.

Amazon Verified Purchase
Easy to install and just a couple of minutes to format.
Used Time Machine to load on a full clone of the original drive which took a couple of hours.
No problems at all - no vibrations, no more heat than the original.
Probably the best £55 I have spent in years.
