Unfortunately I was unable to use the eSATA cable as my eSATA port does not provide power in addition to the data. In order to use this cable your eSATA connection will need to provide power to the drive. I guess partly my own fault for not looking into it further but I don't think it is clear at all since there is no mention of it wherever this product is being sold. The only place I found reference to power being a requirement was on Seagate's website in their FAQ section. I think it should be clearly mentioned on the product requirements section when being sold. I hope this post will make others double check their eSATA connection before making this purchase.

As the previous reviewer correctly observed, this only works when your eSATA port provides power. Like them, I did not realise this when ordering the product, so I guess the product description is a little misleading, but shortly afterwards I purchased a bracket for around 12 pounds which takes a standard internal SATA port and a standard floppy power connector and converts to an external eSATAp port.

This now works perfectly, with transfer speeds doubling on my GoFlex Pro 7200rpm drive.

If you have a USB/eSATA combo port (if you have one, the port should be clearly marked as USB/eSATA, and it's also a bit wider than regular USB), this is a good buy. It's a lot faster than USB 2.0 and this cable is actually a little longer than the USB cable supplied with the hard drive, though I think it's still a bit too short. Apart from that it works great with my Acer Aspire 5739G.

High speed transfers... if you have the right connector
With a casual glance the eSATAp connector may look like your normal USB but it's not; it's the latest version of the eSATA connection but now also provides power. Read more
