Packaging

Tightly packaged using cardboard. Items:
* USB 3.0/SATA desktop adaptor
* USB 3.0 board (plastic anti-static bag)
* USB 3.0 cable
* Power supply (12v)
* Power plug adaptors (plastic bags)
* Pictorial instructions

Installation

I did not install the USB 3.0 board as my PCs are too old for the new PCI interface and I decided to use my laptop as I had a USB 3.0 PCI Express Card available.
Most of the pictorial instructions are for the installation of the USB 3.0 board. Installation of the item itself was a matter of plugging in the items as shown; eg: change power plug on adaptor to UK plug; plug into electrical socket; plug 12v power into USB 3.0/SATA desktop adaptor; find a SATA 3.5" disk; plug onto USB 3.0/SATA desktop adaptor; plug USB 3.0 cable into USB 3.0/SATA desktop adaptor and PC USB 3.0 socket; wait about 5 seconds for PC to recognise device; ready to go.

Observations

The first thing I did with the disk was to move a 2.57 Gb file. I was pleasantly surprised: it seemed as if I were moving a megabit sized file as the speed was good. The observed speed was up to 42.9 MB/s @ 1' 09".
I changed to a USB 2.0 port - the difference was observable as it was less than half the USB 3.0 speed (up to 16 MB/s @ 2' 04").
Using a 6.7 Gb file the max observed speeds were: USB 3.0 48.5 MB/s @ 2' 42"; USB 2.0 24.9MB/s @ 4' 05".
Using 787 jpeg files (each about 2-3 MB - total 2.04 Gb): USB 3.0 30.0 MB/s @ 1' 16"; USB 2.0 17.3MB/s @ 2' 17".
USB 2.0 2.5" device through the PC to the USB 3.0 port 6.7 Gb file: 27 MB/s @ 3' 58". And through a USB 2.0 port 6.7Gb file: 15 MB/s @ 5' 16".
Drive is turned off when PC powers down (even with power plugged in).

This was the perfect upgrade kit for my Seagate GoFlex USB 2.0 2TB external drive and as such it was perfect for the job. It's quite rare for a company to supply upgrade kits because they usually would rather you buy the newer model so Seagate deserve some credit for that. Having said that, if you're computer has already got USB 3.0 capability then it would be more cost effective to buy the newer model of drive as you'll be wasting money on the PCI-e expansion card that comes with this kit.

Included in the kit is:

1 x USB 3.0 Adapter to replace your original USB 2.0 type
1 x USB 3.0 cable
1 x Power supply
1 x USB 3.0 PCI-e Expansion card
1 x instructions

The one obvious thing missing from the kit is a driver disc for the PCI-e card as Seagate included it with the bundled software that came with your original GoFlex drive. So, if you've deleted it or lost it, you could be in trouble as I couldn't find it anywhere online (despite what the other reviewer suggested). Luckily I'd kept a copy so I wasn't affected, but I strongly suggest you look into that before you make your purchase otherwise you could be disappointed.

Installation was straight forward from there and I was soon getting the extra speed I was expecting. I'm not going to mention benchmarks as it depends on too many variables but for me the difference in speed is amazing and I'm more than happy with that.

So I'd happily recommend this kit if you need the USB 3.0 PCI-e expansion card and you've still got the driver for it.

This dock works with the Seagate GoFlex Desk hard-drives. The concept is quite simple - the hard drive can be detached from the data transport mechanism. This means the same drive can work on USB, Firewire, USB 3.0 or newer connectors such as Thunderbolt.

This kit contains everything you need to get going with USB 3.0: a small PCI-E card for USB3.0, a cable, the dock and a power supply. I have used it one a windows PC and also a Ubuntu Linux PC. I'm not entirely convinced by the concept, but this is a good way to get external USB3.0 capabilities, which is much faster than USB2.0, and it shows!

The only reason I got this was for the USB 3 card it comes bundled with. Although having the adapter for the FreeAgent external hard drives may come in useless especially if you are in the market for such a drive.

Because I don't have the external hard drive this is primarily used for I can only review the adapter. However, as this is the major part of this kit to make the thing work I don't feel that's a problem.

The card itself is easy to install into the PC, taking up a x1 PCI express socket. The problem comes though when you try and find the drivers for Windows when you turn the PC back on. There are no drivers in the box and it seems that Seagate themselves make it very difficult to find them. TO get the drivers, go to Seagate's website and go to the downloads section. Choose Seagate External Hard Drives and then choose Blackarmour. It is the second of the two USB 3 drivers listed.

Once this problem was out the way, using USB 3 is just infinitely better. The speed is incredible. For those lucky enough to have a huge USB 3 external drive you will instantly see the benefits over a USB 2 drive.

Highly recommended for the adapter alone and only has 4 stars due to the complications I faced installing the drivers in Windows.
