seagate 3TB drive 30 Sep 2010
By keith

Very well made and beautiful looking drive.
Worked perfectly straight out of box, ready formatted.
no fan so very quiet.
Smaller and neater looking than picture shows
base unit can un-clip from drive using standard sata drive connectors
very small and neat power supply and mini to standard usb lead
white operation light, no flickering, just soft fading when operating
unit does shut down OK when laptop put in sleep
motor stops spinning after 15 minutes - default.
can set to 30 min or 60 min with seagate software installed

cons:
The config. software does not work if the drive is fully encrypted, so you're stuck with 15 minutes spin down.

Have had this running for a good while now and don't know what people are saying about it crashing. Mine is working flawlessly with my Mac. Absolutely stunning, can't fault it at all. It's not as noisy as some people are saying either, had the other half to check. I'm using this as my main storage device with an older 500GB Seagate as my Time Machine, can't fault either of them. Bang on the buck.

AS someone else said, probably a good drive if you don't want to do anything advanced with it. For Plug in and go it is ok -ON ONE CONDITION though, which is not mentioned anywhere AFAICS on the box, nor in the instructions ( such as they are) nor on the HD itself; and that is:

THIS DRIVE MUST BE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE COMPUTER; NOT THROUGH A USB HUB

(according to Seagate customer services we are supposed to know this - it's obvious apparently)

If it is not connected directly to the computer but through a USB hub etc then it won't sleep or shut down. (not on my system which is a PPC Mac)

Seagate have (according to Seagate Customer services) now brought out a version that WILL sleep and shut down when connected througha USB hub but they do not accept that it is a fault or problem warranting a replacement or upgrade if you bought the one that has to be connected directly to the computer, because, well, you should have know better. You may have gathered by now that I am not impressed with Seagate's policy here.

According to seagate, the 2 TB drive I have works fine through the USB hub because it's smaller than the 3 TB drive, and doesn't have the much tighter specifications etc of the 3TB, and (somehow, according to the rep) I am supposed to know that already, and he waffled on for several minutes justifying it.

I pointed out to the Seagate customer service rep that this policy means that at the time of manufacture, seagate were assuming that purchasers of this drive;
1 - would either have a computer with a considerable excess of USB ports or
2 -would never need another external HD or
3 - would be happy to trash this one and buy another bigger one in the future, (suggested by the rep) or
4 -would be happy not to use their USB ports for the usual things like printers, speakers, wacom tablets, SD and CF card readers just so they could use more than one of seagates drives that have to be plugged directly into the computer.
5 - would have a level of precognition such that they would wait for the availability of a 6TB or larger array or other device which would render this one unnecessary in the first place and/or expendable

I also pointed out that the new version he told me about which they have just brought out to address this specific problem is clearly admitting that there was a problem with this drive, but again seagate insist that I should have known when I bought it, that the requirements specifications on the box for 'a USB 2 port' meant, in fact: 'must be DIRECTLY connected to an USB hub.'

I'm on a PPC Mac, but neither was that mentioned anywhere on their packaging or literature as a problem.(I bought the Mac compatible version , checking that my OS was OK)

To sum up I am left with a external HD which requires the direct access to a USB port if I am to use it, and which is not going to be replaced with the upgrade which would cure this problem. I should also mention that I did not find the customer service rep to be courteous either, talking over me repeatedly and adopting an attitude when I asked him to stop doing that.

On that basis I am not inclined to recommend this HD (or Seagate customer services) to anyone.

UPDATE: Seagate contacted me and apologised for the customer service experience and are sending me a2TB and on TB refurbished Hds free of charge. Whilat this is a laudable attempt to redress the Customer service issue it doesn't solve the USB hub issue. They also suggested (to solve the usb hub issue), setting HDs to sleep whenever possible and to set sleep to a short time in system prefs and to unmount Hds before shutting computer. Both of these I had tried previously - it made no difference. They also suggested tuning the power off at the wall (mains) to power them down completely after shutting down my computer, and of course this I had already considered but am still not sure how much risk there is of data loss from turning them off this way. I still don't understand why my other external drives don't have this problem yet this model does
They also suggested using the utility that came with the drive- I tried previously - it doesnt recognise the drive- they are now looking into it
