I have two of these. I was very satisfied with the first so I bought the second without any hesitation.
I use them as simple external drives via their USB interface.
They work well and are faster than any of the other external drives that I have.
They run silently and do net get hot.

I bought this drive because I expected it firstly to be reliable (so far it is) and secondly because I liked the idea of an automatic complete drive backup (total disaster). I loaded the software, kicked off the backup; then it got part way and hung. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to complete - failure one. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software, and the backup appeared to complete, but too quickly. On checking the data, the backup had only partially completed - failure two. I then tested the automatic backup of updated files, but nothing happened - failure three. I've therefore reverted to the reliable backup that Windows Vista provides - it's not automatic and can't operate more frequently than daily, but at least it does what it claims to do. I would advise anybody only to purchase this drive if they don't plan to use the backup software.

I hate the term "future-proofing". Nothing is really "future-proof". Nothing. Least of all anything technological. Despite this fact, some people are quite fond of the idea of "future-proofing" everything they own and, for them, this hard drive is manna from heaven. For everyone else, it simply means that if you have a FireWire-enabled computer, or when you eventually get a USB 3- or LightPeak-equipped computer, you can buy the appropriate adapter rather than a whole new drive in order to upgrade transfer speeds, saving yourself some money and the hassle of having to transfer all of your data.
I like the design of the drive - it's good-looking in a Space Odyssey monolith kind of way - even though there are a couple of design irritations. The adapter base isn't wide enough or heavy enough to provide a totally stable base for the drive when it's used in the vertical position. The capacity gauge (which doesn't work without installing Seagate's software) is so ballpark it's virtually pointless. I've read that the drive uses passive cooling and doesn't have a fan, but it sounds suspiciously like it has one to me; it's noticeably noisier than my old Toshiba 1TB USB 3.5" External Desktop Hard Drive.
Even so, I like this drive because of its good looks, good build quality and its upgradeable nature (nay "future-proof" nature for some).

Seagate is as good as always.
The only thing is the cable inside does work when I conect it to my laptop. I guess it may not usb 2.0. Anyway, I used one my own cables. Read more
