Product Description

Experience the FAST Factor advantage. Using flash-assisted storage technology (FAST) you get solid-state performance, expansive capacity, and exceptional reliability in an all-in-one device. Momentus XT drives boot and perform like an SSD, up to 3x faster than a traditional HDD, with SATA 6Gb/s compatibility with NCQ for interface speed. The all-in-one design for simplicity and ease of installation makes the Momentus XT ideal for any laptop or PC, any OS, and any application.

Why should a high-performance laptop or PC be slower than your tablet or smart phone? It shouldn't. The FAST Factor features of the Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive (SSHD) give you the instant-on response of solid state memory and the extremely large capacity of a hard drive. You get both the kick and the capacity that lets you consume, create and store at amazing speeds.

In the past, the term "instant-on" could not be applied to a standard laptop or PC. That kind of speed was available only in systems few could afford or in tablet devices made for online browsing, not content creation. By contrast, the Momentus XT drive with FAST Factor technology is an affordable, well-designed SSHD that delivers the speed of solid state memory with the storage benefits of a hard disk drive (HDD). It has more data integrity and retention techniques than solid state drives (SSDs) or other combination solutions. Using flash-assisted storage technology (FAST) and Adaptive Memory technology, you get solid state performance, expansive capacity and exceptional reliability in an all-in-one device.

The Momentus XT drive is the only all-in-one device that can deliver affordable SSD performance without compromising battery life, storage requirements, data integrity, integration complexity, or your pocketbook.

Momentus XT drives are known for incredibly fast boot-up times, and now they are even better with FAST Factor boot technology. This system boot-up technique can reduce your boot time to mere seconds for a fast cold-boot start. It can cut your system start-up time by up to 65% over a traditional HDD. FAST Factor boot technology will deliver the fastest boot possible, whether you boot your system once a day or once a week. Your OS boot-up files are always there, ready to work.

Momentus XT solid state hybrid drives also implement a management feature that provides seamless integration between hardware, firmware and high-speed NAND flash while maintaining data integrity under all conditions--any system, any OS and with any driver.

Adaptive Memory technology delivers SSD-like response from the applications and files you use the most. It lets the Momentus XT drive selectively tackle frequently used data, copy it to the flash, track its relevancy and keep the flash current. You get the instant response experience you need to perform at your best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good investment over standard 5400 SATA2 HDDs 21 April 2012
By azro
THIS REVIEW IS FROM A MACBOOK PERSPECTIVE AND DEALS WITH LION INSTALLATION

I have a (late 2011) Macbook Pro that shipped with a Toshiba SATA2 5400rpm standard hard disk drive and had Lion (OSX 10.7.3) preinstalled.

The HDD was definitely the weak link after upgrading the memory to a healthy 8GB (2x4GB Crucial ram for 35). I'd bought the Mac as I wanted to get into video editing and decided that Final Cut Pro X was the best option for me, pricewise and because I was doing a course using FCP 7.

I'd considered buying another Crucial M4 SSD, which is a good compromise in bang for buck (as far as SSDs tend to go of course). But I had misgivings reading about longevity and some of the problems relating to enabling TRIM support in OSX (Lion) and decided that, for most operations, this Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive would suffice.

First off, the HDD's SATA3 and 7200rpm and it was fully supported by my Macbook Pro. I was pretty apprhensive about how I was actually going to re-install Lion to a brand new hard drive but it turned out to be plain sailing. As my Macbook Pro shipped with Lion, there was no physical media supplied to reinstall it and I couldn't use the redownload from the Mac App store trick to make a Lion backup disc. But I discovered the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant tool (downloadable from apple: [...]/link not allowed from Amazon so you'll have to google it) and just used an SD card to install the hidden recovery disk on, so that, when I started the new Momentus drive up, I could then painlessly use the Lion installer over internet. No fuss at all. I wanted a clean install so there was no problem at all.

As for the performance of the new hybrid drive, well, I couldn't be happier. It's exceeded my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning 16 Feb 2012
By DGBKS
This product is brilliant. I installed it on a Dell Studio 1558 - Core i5 with 4gb RAM. It was replacing a Samsung 500gb SATA. The computer is fully loaded with full Office and Adobe Suites. I cloned the drive using Acronis. The increase in speeds are far beyond what I was expecting.

Boot Time Comparison

Old Samsung Sata:

Login Screen: 1:45
Full Boot: 5:48

Samsung Momentus XT 750gb

1st Boot

Login Screen: 1:25
Full Boot: 4.17

2nd Boot

Login Screen: 1:15
Full Boot: 3:44

3rd boot

Login Screen: 0.50
Full Boot: 2.10

4th boot

Login Screen: 0.37
Full Boot: 1:32

5th boot

Login Screen: 0.31
Full Boot: 1:27

Furthermore as it learns which applications you use they too open far quicker and work at greater speeds.

Bravo Seagate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seagate Momentus XT and 2010 15" Macbook Pro 15 April 2012

Verified Purchase
Hello. I'm writing this review on the assumption that you have done some research on the Momentus XT drive and know a bit about how it works.

After upgrading my 2010 15" Macbook Pro to Lion I was experiencing long boot times (compared to Snow Leopard previously) and without the funds to purchase a new Macbook Pro any time soon I was looking for something to speed up the general performance of my machine to prolong its life. My wife had recently bought a Macbook Air which put my Core i5 Macbook Pro to shame mainly because of the flash drive compared to my stock Hitachi 320gb 5400rpm drive. My choices were a full blown SSD which brings with it limited capacity (I already had an external 1TB firewire 800 drive that I was off loading a lot of files to) at a high cost per GB or the Seagate Momentus XT. After reading issues with the 1st gen XT and Macs (although I believe this was fixed in later firmwares SD26+) I started looking at the second gen XT 750gb ST750LX003 which has some new features (FAST factor) and has "apparently" been extensively tested on Macs (was the first one not?). The XT provided high capacity, lower price and some of the speed benefits of flash drives.

Once I got the drive it was a simple case of popping it into the machine as with any drive. Remember you will need a torx screwdriver to unscrew the mounts from your stock drive and put it on the new one. As I'd read about issues with cloning software onto these drives (and issues with having to zap the PRAM) I decided I would install Lion from scratch using the network recovery feature of Lion which connects to Apple's servers directly from the firmware of the Mac and downloads Lion onto your drive (you need your Mac App Store log in details).

Primary reasons for disk upgrade:
1. Wanted more disk space for downloading triple play DVDs to take on holiday
2. Windows 7 taking 5 minutes to startup
3. Cost
4. Convenience and easy upgrade

Result:
1. 250gb to 750gb
2. Startup down to less than 1 minute
3. Very good compared with other options
4. Less than 1hour to install and cloan old hdd to new hybrid, restart and away it went. Basically 12 restarts and I will have saved more restart time than the time taken to install it.

Conclusion:
Awesome, could not be happier and to use an over used phrase, ticks all the boxes.

I really did just want an easy upgrade instead of having to reinstall windows or go to the trouble of configuring a system with a ssd for the Os boot drive and hdd for data. Been there and done that too many times in the past. So for me, the combination of size, boot time, ease of upgrade is well worth the cost. Finally I will stop hearing the family complaining about how long the computer takes to startup.

6 month follow up:
With this type of product, I always think it good to follow up after the initial honeymoon period.
Still mighty impressed. Monitored boot times since the install, regularly less than 1 minute, average around 45 seconds. So saved myself a good 1/2 a day of startup time in 6 months. I'm confident if I performed a fresh install I could halve that, but TBH CBA.

Not one single complaint of a slow computer from any family member. Worth 100 in itself.
Did have some strange hanging of IE after switching drive, might just have been coincidence, switched to Chrome, problem solved.
