I bought this disk to plug into an old iMac running 10.3.9. It works fine after a quick repartition. I had read about some Seagate disks spinning down without warning, but no such issues with this one. There is no on/off switch but ejecting it will power it down, as will putting the computer to sleep. Booting the computer from the external disk also works. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is it does run hotter than I would have liked. I have a Buffalo 1Tb disk at work which gets only slightly warm to the touch. The case is not quite as metallic as I was expecting, but I suppose it doesn't show the fingerprints. It looks much better than the previous series of black and orange ones. The LEDs in the Seagate logo do slowly change in brightness when the disk is in use.

I bought 3 of these based upon other reviewers elsewhere who made bold claims about the quietness of these drives and thus were suitable in a recording environment. They're are far from silent and I regret buying them. One of the drives was just to be a back-up drive for Time Machine and in that capacity it's fine but again the noise level is intrusive.

Rather comically, it occasionally makes a noise like a cat running on a wooden floor. For a few days I thought it was exactly that until one night when both cats were sat in front of the stove I heard them upstairs cavorting! On closer inspection it turned out to be the sound of the drive writing during Time Machine updates! I've placed it on a rubber mat but it is still audible in a silent room but I can't hear it over the TV as I could before. So in summary, they appear fine but if, like me you want a genuinely quiet product, look elsewhere. I think I'm probably not going to be able to live with two of them running in my studio at once.

Fast, quiet, cool running and great value. The best value 1394B Drive there is. All the cables you might need are included - Firewire 400 to 800, (1394 A to B) and with the second Firewire 800 port you can daisy chain loads of them together to keep expanding your storage from a single connection on your mac. Ideal for use with Time Machine, or Super Duper. Recommend that you partition the disk into a couple of smaller partitions before starting to fill it up

Bear in mind I just use it as a Time Machine backup drive for my MacBook Pro, it is pretty good overall. It doesn't seem to be too loud to my ears, seems quick to move stuff around too. The only gripe so far is that it only mounts every other time you plug in the Firewire 800 cable (that's daisy chained to other drives after it). You have to eject the other drives, unplug the lead and then plug it in again - weird.

ok product - but wont switch off.
Put it to sleep and it powers down. Eject it and switch off Mac, it powers back up seconds 5-10 seconds later.
Have tried very combination possible. Only goes off when unplugged from Mac or itself.
