Commander Amanda Lee Garrett returns in this latest novel from Simon Cobb. With the USS Cunningham in dry dock following the events portrayed in Sea Strike, Commander Garrett is assigned to a United Nations task force operating in West Africa. Her mission is to bring a halt to the empire building schemes of General Obe Belewa.
The setting is that of a littoral warfare environment and is extremely reminiscent of accounts of coastal and riverine activities along the Mekong Delta in the Vietnam War.
The main characters are very true to life while having a cavalier attitude to standard US Navy doctrine and adopt new ones all within the proper chain of command, much as did the crews of the US Navy Monitors and 'Swift' boats in Vietnam. The Vietnam War was another time, and Seafighter combines high technology PGACs (Patrol Gunboat- Air Cushion) equipped with a wide array of weaponry, stealth features and general versatility to perform the littoral and riverine combat role. Commander Garret must put these to great use along with her own brand of guile and cunning to operate within UN mandates to defeat a devious enemy. An enemy which has no regards for UN mandates and who will try anything to achieve his dream of uniting West Africa under his control.
Overall, a great book with plenty of action and military planning. I eagerly look forward to Simon Cobb's next offering.
