I bought this oil from Summerbee after using their Sea Buckthorne cream very succesfully to treat my rosacea. I use this oil if I have an extra flare up (after, say, sniffing the cork of a wine bottle or going outside during the day in winter without using sunscreen, she said bitterly). It helps a lot, as I thought it would. But I've discovered another wonderful use for it, which I hadn't intended it for.
My 5 year old suffers (as I did at his age) from blepharitis, which is a kind of psoriasis-related condition which affects (in his case) the eyelash follicles and eyelids, causing a crusty 'sleep' to build up along his eyelash line, and makes his eyes sore. I've always used warm compresses and bathed it with a bicarb solution (which is the official NHS line as it's not curable, you just have to manage it), and this has stopped styes developing, but the itchiness, crustiness and dryness has always been there to varying degrees. Until... I wondered one night, should I try giving them a wipe with my Sea Buckthorn oil after bathing them? I knew the oil didn't irritate my eyes as I'd used it already, and as it's an entirely natural product anyway, I had no worries about using it on Sam. I've done that for 5 nights in a row now (just a drop or two on a cotton wool pad wiped gently along his eyelash line) and hey bloomin' presto - his eyes look completely normal. No itching, no redness, no crusty gunk.... and I should say that for the past two nights, that's WITHOUT the tiresome boiling water, allowing it to cool, adding bicarb and bathing his eyes. No bathing, just a bit of oil.
I wish my mum had known about this stuff when I was 5 (did it even exist in this form in 1967??) - I regularly had styes until the condition just went away on its own (strong memories of seeing the world through a haze of eye ointment). Sam's delighted with it, he hated the bathing routine, whereas he doesn't mind this quick wipe with the oil and he's so happy that his eyes look "normal" now :)
If you or your child has blepharitis, give it a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
