Review

"An extraordinarily useful edition. The supplementary and contextual materials are not only of scholarly significance themselves but also provide invaluable aids for the first-time reader of Jack London's novels."--David Holloway, Portland State University
"A fine, attractive, useful edition."--George F. Day, University of Northern Iowa
"A fine edition. I was especially impressed with the appendices and the notes section. Very helpful."--John Guzlowski, Eastern Illinois University
"Excellent edition--the comments by Sutherland illuminate the philosophical and personal underpinings of a deceptively complex work by a deceptively complex writer. Also the Explanatory Notes are quite good."--Jack Summers, Central Piedmont Community College
"Thank you."--James R. Hepworth, Lewis-Clark State College

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III Wolf Larsen ceased swearing as suddenly as he had begun. He relighted his cigar and glanced around. His eyes chanced upon the cook. " Well, Cooky ?" he began, with a suaveness that was cold and of the temper of steel. " Yes, sir," the cook eagerly interpolated, with appeasing and apologetic servility. " Don't you think you've stretched that neck of yours jus- about enough ? It's unhealthy, you know. The mate's gone, so I can't afford to lose you too. You must be very, very careful of your health, Cooky. Understand ?" His last word, in striking contrast with the smoothness of his previous utterance, snapped like the lash of a whip. The cook quailed under it. " Yes, sir," was the meek reply, as the offending head disappeared into the galley. At this sweeping rebuke, which the cook had only pointed, the rest of the crew became uninterested and fel1 to work at one task or another. A number of men, however, who were lounging about a companionway between tnt galley and the hatch, and who did not seem to be sailors continued talking in low tones with one another. These, I afterward learned, were the hunters, the men who shot the seals, and a very superior breed to common sailor folk. " Johansen ! " Wolf Larsen called out . A sailor steppe forward obediently. " Get your palm and needle and sewthe beggar up. You'll find some old canvas in the sail- locker. Make it do." " What'll I put on his feet, sir ?" the man asked, after the customary "Ay, ay, sir." " We'll see to that," Wolf Larsen answered, and elevated his voice in a call of " Cooky!" Thomas Mugridge popped out of his galley like a jack- in-the-box. " Go below and fill a sack with coal." " Any of you fellows got a Bible or prayer-book ? " was the captain's next demand, this time of ... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Sea Wolf 29 Nov 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I have never read any of Jack Londons books previously, to be honest I had never heard of him. However having read "Sea Wolf" I will certainly read others. The story can for short periods appear extremely laboured, but stick with it as it is an extremely good exciting read.

By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The book is a classic study of two characters - the Luciferian captain Wolf Larson, and the gentleman-turned-neophyte-sailor Humphrey Van Weyden. As Hump learns to survive the brutal conditions aboard Larson's ship, the Ghost, he grows from a soft academic type to a strong and resourceful survivor. Larson, the captain, is presented as a monster with no regard for human life. Larson is intrigued with Hump and engages him in philosophical discussions, but absorbs none of Hump's basic goodness. As Hump develops into a man, Larson degenerates into a blinded, diseased, pitiful creature. Hump overcomes his adverse conditions and even finds love, while Larson self-destructs. The adventure aboard the vessel is described in vivid detail, and the author clearly knows sailing. A wonderful story!

Good Free Read 5 Dec 2010

First free book I have read on the Kindle never having heard of Jack London. Pleasantly surprised. Although it gets complex with technical sailing ship terminology the story line is excellent and will encourage to read more by this author.
