Book Description

20 Jun 2013
I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk. Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her-her identity, her spirit, her will to live-pay. All Josh Bennett wants is to be left alone, and everyone allows it because they all know his story: each person he loved was taken from his life until at seventeen years old there was no one left. When your name is synonymous with death, people tend to give you your space. Everyone except Nastya, a new girl in town who won't go away until she's insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of a mystery she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she's been hiding--or if he even wants to. The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances. For fans of Perks of Being a Wallflower.

BOOK REVIEW: The Sea of Tranquility - Katja Millay

Nastya Kashnikov lurks within the shadows of humanity; she shrouds her body in black and covers her face in dark makeup over translucent skin, and she doesn't speak... to anybody!

However, Nastya wasn't always this way. A renowned local `Brighton' girl, she held a talent that defied beauty. But one day, when she was fifteen, everything she held dear, everything she had worked so hard for, was stripped from her - taken away in a moment of sheer brutality so profound that all that remained of Nastya was a shell of her former self.

Now, approaching Eighteen, Nastya has moved away from her local town to escape the horrors of her past, and moved in with her supportive Aunt, a two-hour drive away. After a year or two of home schooling, she has decided that going back to High school is not only a necessity, but also a requirement if she is ever to graduate.

Regarded as the new `freak' in school, she attracts some unwanted attention, until one day a boy steps in to aid her - this boy is Josh, a reclusive student who sits alone, a hidden force field intact, keeping at bay all those around him. Having endured his own share of past torment, he sees the girl behind the façade, knows the pain that dwells within her dark, over made up eyes, and even if he doesn't understand it - deep down he knows this girl is like him. Broken.

Josh just wants to build furniture, so every night he spends precious hours in his garage workshop, working on his next project, until one night he sees her. Drenched in sweat, cut legs and a troubled brow, he offers to take her home - after all, what is a girl doing running through the streets at midnight?

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing 8 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I just cannot understand why more people have not reviewed and raved about this book. I read this book in January and have just read it again after reading Losing Hope and remembering that there was a book I read and loved which featured a female lead who ran (like Sky in Hopeless/Losing Hope). I trawled through my kindle and then found it. Sea of Tranquility. And I read it again. And I think I actually love it even more than I did the first time I read it. Beautiful, painful, funny, true: The Sea of Tranquility is a book which shows that Katja Millay is a writer who is able to write so beautifully you find yourself reading and re-reading lines because you are so in awe of her ability to convey each character's feelings in such a way you feel them yourself.

Josh Bennett. What can I say? After reading Losing Hope I was left with a feeling that sometimes it's difficult for female writers to accurately depict a male character's POV without resorting to the use of expletives and slightly juvenile conversation with their male friends. I didn't love Holder as much as I did reading him in Hopeless - I just didn't think his complexity and intensity was captured accurately enough in Losing Hope. With The Sea of Tranquility, it was totally the opposite. Josh Bennett's voice was authentic and true - and you just could not help but fall in love with him. He was real, male, strong, weak, a one of a kind man-child and you could understand why everyone stayed away from him but wanted to be near him.

As for Nastya, some readers may not like her, but that is the point: she did not like herself -therefore her narrative is coming from a place of self-loathing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy It! 1 July 2013

I was hooked by the unique ‘voice’ of this novel from the very first line, the prose are captivating. The point of view switched between Nastya and Josh, but in both cases the sense of these characters was immediate and honest. I guess this narration was ‘The Death of Bees’ (random blurted thought) meets ‘Pushing the Limits’.

I would have liked more insight into Josh’s head in the second half of the novel and some of Nastya’s decisions seem to come from a far more self-destructive place than you anticipate, but the storytelling was fairly balanced otherwise. I enjoyed the slow growth of their friendship, the way they gradually slipped passed one another’s guard. The secondary characters like Drew and Tierney were well drawn, interesting and entertaining – they were pretty perfect and didn’t feel extraneous.

If you like smart observant characters, romance, heartache and stories to get lost in then this is a good bet. It’s not fantasy, or science fiction, or a Mills and Boon romance, but it will wreck you, steal your breath and your affections, your heart even. It will impress you.

This is a book that was worthy of a recommendation by Colleen Hoover.
