Pure treasure - an atmospheric story brought alive by breathtaking illustrations,
This review is from: The Sea Swallow (Hardcover)
The story tells of Mary the daughter of a fisherman whose father is killed in a storm, and her fight to save her town from being swallowed by waves in a terrible war between land and sea. The story is atmospheric, haunting and well-told. However what really sells the book is the way in which the illustrator's wonderful, evocative pictures give life to the words so that the reader can smell the salt, sand and seaweed on every page, and hear the crashing of the waves that threaten to engulf Mary's town. Every turn of the page gives the reader a new and often shocking experience of the immensity and power of nature. The competition-winning illustrator, Hannah Megee, creates picture after picture of breathtaking beauty and strangeness. Each one is a minature masterpiece and the depiction of waves rivals and may even surpass those of the Japanese master, Hokusai. Get this book, it is pure treasure. And not just for children.

Beautiful illustrations and a lovely local story,
This review is from: The Sea Swallow (Hardcover)
Really nice illustrations. A book with an imaginative story for children that's attractively set and interesting for the adults too (always appreciated). It's part of a local project and has an atypical mermaid story set in places you can actually visit in Lancashire; great fun. I think there is a sculpture trail being created too which will be a bit of an adventure to follow - I'll be keeping my eyes peeled.Lovely book in a brilliant fantasy rewriting of an interesting local area.
