A legend was created when Lambdin first put Lewrie on the page, this book is no exeption, Lambdin has a mastery of words which combines to create a tapestry so rich and diverse that it stands along side James Nelson and Patrick O'Brian. Mr O'Brian sadly passed away in 2000, and now the torch must be passed; I cannot think of any to people better suited to the task than these new masters of fiction.

The firat few pages are indeed difficult; after reading O'Brian and Kent, the language is a slightly heavygoing. This is not to say it is more or less accurate than O'Brians 18th Century vocabulary (after all, not every Captain spoke like landed Gentry)however, this sort of language would not suit Lewrie.

However once you get past the difficult transition time (about half an hour) it is a fantastic read.

Lewrie's past indiscretions, and there are plenty of those, have finaly caught up with him, his wife has disowned him and the only safe place to be is back at sea?

Now a hero of Camperdown, Captain Alan Lewrie is sent to the Caribean where he manages to keep his breeches up - most of the time. A slave revolt lead by Toussaint L'Overture is over-running British interests in some of the islands and Lewrie has to use all his skills to keep HMS Proteus afloat whilst at the same time trying to please rather awkward senior officers.

I love Dewey Lambdin's Alan Lewrie Character he is sinical and a philanderer, but for all his "flaws" he is damned good at his job, this means you get a good laugh as well as an advanture novel, the historicle content is spot on too. If you haven't tried this series it's a must for all you fans of high seas adventure in the age of sail.

I've read all of Lambdins series thus far and enjoyed all until this one. Turning each page hoping for something to happen and being disappointed.Let's hope that the return of an old enemy will perk things up in the next book. If this had been my first read it would also have been my last, but hang on in there, subsequent novels may return to the sparky and exciting tales of the first few in the series.
