Opal Cowan's newfound power to steal the magic of another makes her too powerful, and too dangerous, in the eyes of the Council. Forced to return to the keep, Opal plots her escape to find the man who can prove her sanity. But although she knows Ulrick switched bodies with Devlen, everyone believes Opal has been taken in by an elaborate lie. With no proof and few allies, Opal must learn to trust herself especially as everyone now wants a piece of her powers for their own gain.
This is the second book in the Glass trilogy (the first being
Storm Glass and the third is
Spy Glass). I read and loved the first so I grabbed this one off my shelf pretty much as soon as I was done, and I must say I wasn't disappointed. Having read Maria V. Snyder's other trilogy (
Poison Study,
Magic Study and
Fire Study) I knew that the plot for this trilogy would twist and turn and end up in a completely unexpected place, and so far it has done just that.
The plot of this book continues straight on from its predecessor but is full of twists and turns. There is a strong political focus as Opal realises that her skill at creating glass messengers is revolutionising Sitia, and that she no longer has any choice about continuing her work. The romance aspect of the storyline has become a little complicated as while Opal is with Kade, she's also searching for Ulrick and trying to figure out what her feelings are for Devlen.
Opal does become understandably bitter over the course of the book, and her character takes a darker tone as the story progresses. Given what she's been through I think it's fair that she would become morose and bitter, but she also develops some more courage and confidence and is now willing to go after what she wants. She grew a lot as a character over the course of the book, and I can't wait to see what happens next especially after the dramatic ending.
Oh - and this trilogy is meant to be read after the Study trilogy, so if you're deciding between the two read that one first. You can read this one without reading the other, but be aware the Glass books contain massive spoilers for the Study books.
All in all, this was a great read and I'm really looking forward to reading
Spy Glass.
