Product Description

Product Description

Visitors to the North Sea are astonished at the profusion of marine life that exists in this relatively small, box-shaped sea that is bounded by Britain to the west and the shores of northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and the far south-west of Sweden in the east. This book, the first of its kind, includes more than 300 full-colour photographs and black-and-white line drawings. The introduction describes the formation of the North Sea, the habitats and types of animal found there, and the urgent conservation issues of this ecologically diverse area. The core of the book is the field guide section. This contains fascinating species accounts accompanied by identification photographs of nearly 300 species of sea creature, including fishes, molluscs, crustaceans, starfish, sponges and corals.

Good book and good value, and quick delivery from Amazon. Even though I chose Super Saver Delivery, they shipped it straight away anyway..good stuff. The only comments I can make about the book are some of the photos in the book aren't as clear as I would have liked, especially as it's written by a top underwater photographer. I bought it to identify the fish I catch as I'm new to fishing, but some of the photos aren't really good for this. Also it would have been nice if it was a bit smaller to make it more pocket sized, although it'll fit into a large anorak patch pocket ok. Apart from that, a good book at a reasonable price.

A well presented book that has many less usual species, the photos are generally good. There are however several very obvious mistakes that leave me wondering if the descriptions and photos or less familiar species are accurate. With the bony fishes, many common species are missing and the author uses incorrect photos. A photo of a Pollock is used for Saithe and a photo of Horse mackereel (Scad) is used for Mackerel. With the invertibrates, the photos of Lugworms and Ragworms are the wrong way round and the photo for the Cockle shows a clam. Again, many common species are missing.
All said and done, this book will still be a usefull volume.

If you are doing a Marine Biology course this is a useful book to have if you are doing an assessment on Invertebrates in British waters.
