Book Description

The elite mercenaries of the Black Legion have fought their way free of the clutches of the Imperial Fleet, but only at the cost of many warriors and ships. The survivors lead their battered ships out to the fringes of the Empire, but every day that passes gives the Emperor time to mobilise ships and soldiers to bring the final blow against the exhausted mercenaries.

They must continue on to the Sea of Fire, the deadly border region between Hayastan and the Carduchian Wilderness, or face utter annihilation at the Emperor’s hands. Ancient stories tell of these dead sectors of space, vast ocean of emptiness, with few worlds or moons able to supply the fleet. The border itself is a place so deadly that the fiery storms can lash out and destroy even the strongest of ships, and there are rumours of mysterious and powerful warships infesting the region.

Xenophon will have to use every ruse and stratagem he can come up with to give them any possibility of escape. They might even stand a chance if the leaders of the Legion didn’t use every opportunity to enrich their position and turn on each other, even when in the middle of catastrophe.

Sea of Fire is the fifth book in the Star Legions series from Michael G. Thomas, the bestselling author of the Star Crusades series. Previously published as the Black Legion series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interstellar mercenaries doing what they do best - fight! 19 Aug. 2014

The legion continues its fighting retreat in the Median Empire. The pacing was quite good involving a series of battles without getting sensory overload. Xenephron is developing into a good strategist and as a fighter. Five stars was given because this book can be re-read several times.

What might throw a new reader off is the organization structure of the legion which is based on the city states structure of Ancient Greece. Humanity has grown into separate systems and culture. Collectively the humans are a formidable fighting force when working together, but they have a tendency to compete and fight amongst themselves. Thomas has given a good blend of sci-fi fighting using projectile weapons and laser along with swords for close combat.

The strategy is comparable to the character of Cletus from Gordon Dicksons Dorsai series.

This is the fifth book in a series so if you're planning on starting here, stop now and pick up the first four. You won't be disappointed. I'm a big fan of the space/war/star trek-esque genre. This series has lived up to everything I was hoping it would be. The plot is there, along with the great descriptive action sequences, and it continues not only through each book, but the series as a whole. This is a great book and a better series.

This science fiction book is full of political and military intrigue. Thomas creates an elaborate world through his vivid descriptions and flushed out characters. The complicated plot was very compelling, making me wanting to continue reading. This novel includes mercenaries, blood thirsty generals, battling empires, rogue nations, and intense battles, everything that you need to make an enticing science fiction read. Follow the Black Legion and see if they can survive standing up to the Great King Artaxerxes and a lord that is desperate to do anything to make it back into the King's good graces. Xenophon and his friends must try to avoid making enemies and running into the Median Imperial Fleet. I also really enjoyed all the references to ancient Greek city states. Any fan of intergalactic battle novels will enjoy this title by Michael Thomas.

I found Star Legions and Star Crusades similar, but with enough difference to enjoy the series. It is action filled, has a clear hero, and enough strife to keep the plot moving. At times a little too simple, but a good read.
