The hero is Guernsey-Island smuggler Gilliat (Rock Hudson); the heroine is glamorous British spy Drouette (Yvonne de Carlo). Set during the Napoleonic wars, the plot finds Gilliat and Drouette trying to outsmart one another for the first few reels. Gilliat even kidnaps Drouette at one point, believing her to be in league with the hated French. Eventually, of course, Gilliat must rescue Drouette from the French, thereby preventing Napoleon's planned invasion of England. This 1952 seafaring classic was always a favourite of mine, thus when i became aware of it's DVD release, i was more than thrilled. The then raw talent of Rock Hudson is a good match for stunning Yvonne de Carlo, as was also seen in their previous pairing, Scarlet Angel. The acting honours here, though, must go to Maxwell Reed as Hudson's villainous rival. Along with a competent supporting cast of familiar faces, this beautifully filmed, in and around the Channel Islands, tale is never less than entertaining.

Great adventuring with Yvonne de Carlo and Rock Hudson in top form. I agree with the previous reviewer - Maxwell Reed is a deep-dyed baddie of the first order!

Typical swashbuckler from the 50s which has as it's highlight a deliciously OTT performance from the great Maxwell Reed as the villain Rantaine. A must for afficianados of one of British film's unsung heroes.
