John Wayne plays, in this watchable adventure, a German sea captain, demoted to a tramp steamer for his anti-Nazi views (cornily and inevitably!), who is in Sydney when "the balloon goes up" and war is about to be declared. His friend, a British naval officer, visits his ship in port and shows off his lush girlfriend (Lana Turner -- what a babe!), who is in reality a German spy. Wayne has "known" her in the past as being a girl of "colourful" history and makes this known to his friend, who is henceforth not a friend! Wayne, Lana, the Nazi spy, extremist First Officer and crew all slip out of port, pursued by the British. On a normally uninhabited island, a maritime rescue station, the First Officer murders the mariners there and steals their supplies. Wayne is blamed by the British and the transworld chase is on...
A fairly intelligent film, despite the Hollywood-filmic inevitability of the Nazi First Officer being both sadist and coward. The film was made in the 1950's, closer to WW2 itself and before the advent of such as Spielberg, so the fantasy propaganda takes a back seat. The sea scenes are well filmed and the ending imaginative. Worth seeing.
