Well worth a read. 17 April 2011
By jbl
Format:Paperback
This is not your usual lesbian fiction fare of 'will they, won't they' .. when you know they will.

This is about young woman who joins the navy, not really understanding why, except for the need to get away from somehow being different to everyone else around her.

This book follows the first few weeks of training of Roberta Weston. It's about what she dicovers about herself, the friends she makes, the leaders she learns from and about growing up. (It is also about the lack of equality for women and even less so for African American women in life and in the military.)

It is a quietly written book, no deep secrets or hysterics or big love scenes. It is written with character and humour and a depth that you take for granted until you finish it and want more of it.

I wish the author had written more books but if she had only had one book to write, I am glad it is this one and that I was able to read it.
