Product Description

Product Description

Tibetan sculpture poses particular challenges to the art historian because of difficulties in dating works and ascertaining the provenance from their style. This book will explore the issue surrounding these problems. The examples are drawn principally from the extensive Nyingjei Lam collection.

This review is from: Sculptural Heritage of Tibet (Hardcover)
The Nyingjei Lam Collection is idiosyncratic and refined, showing the advanced sensibility of a careful and sensitive collector. Many of the bronze sculptures found here are highly unusual, and it is very refreshing to see a catalogue made up entirely of works we have never seen before. The authors have written a very well-researched and thoughtful catalogue which explores thoroughly the many themes suggested by the works of art they approach; a terrific job in the difficult field of catalogue raisonne, where the scholar is forced to deal with a selection imposed arbitrarily. Particularly impressive is the wide selection of supporting material from other collections. The catalogue is well produced and the photos are clear. For an on-line sample from this lovely collection, originally exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford England (through 1999)...
