Product Description

Product Description

"Sculpting the Human Figure" is both a practical and inspirational guide to an age-old art. Written by a leading and distinguished sculptor, it draws on pieces from the Renaissance to explain the techniques and secrets of contemporary work. John W Mills encourages students and collectors to understand the processes and techniques of sculpture, and thereby to explore the opportunity and creativity of the human figure. Topics covered include: the basics of sculpture - the studio, tools and materials required; preparations - maquettes, drawings and working models; modelling and carving the head; relief sculpture; modelling and carving the figure; moulds and casting; and scaling up.

About the Author

John W Mills PPRBS ARCA FRSA studied at the Hammersmith School of Art before continuing his training at the Royal College of Art. He taught sculpture for nearly two decades before stopping in 1977 to become a full-time sculptor. He was elected President of The Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1986 and 1997. His major commissions have included a monument to The Women of World War II in Whitehall, Westminster [2005] and the National Firefighters Memorial Blitz in St Paul's, London [1991]. He designed and made the D-Day 50 pence piece for the Royal Mint, which was voted best coin of 1994.

First Sentence
The description 'traditional' has in some quarters become a criticism, usually referring pejoratively to figurative but not abstract sculpture, even though both can be of poor quality (and, indeed, often are). Read the first page

Disappointed 17 Feb 2011

This book didn't cost much--thank goodness. It has a very shallow treatment of the subject and tries to make up for it with photos of sculpture. It seems to me that it was a book quickly and carelessly thrown together by taking bits and pieces from previous books and adding some photos. Without the photos, the book would be pure trash. I'm surprised the author approved of this book and allowed his name to be used on it.
