Scrum and agile methodologies have helped software development teams organize and become more efficient. Lean methods like kanban can extend these benefits. This books isn't prose. The subtitle for the book claims that there are essays in there - there aren't. It looks like it might be the rough notes for a presentation. Maybe if you already know what he's talking about there are some interesting things being said. There's no structured argument, no narrative. Feels like marking an undergraduate essay. Student is possibly clever, possibly has something to say but appears unaware that there is any craft or application required to communicate in writing.

Ugh! Publish on demand in the worst form I've seen.

This book is good, IF, you know the background and have read the books he mentions in the Introduction. These are: Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash (Addison-Wesley Signature), Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit by Tom and Mary Poppendieck, Agile Management for Software Engineering: Applying the Theory of Constraints for Business Results by David Anderson, and Managing the Design Factory: A Product Developers Tool Kit by Donald Reinertson.

If you've read them, then the ideas from those upon which he builds will make sense. As he says somewhere in the book, he doesn't want to rehash arguments others have already made.

If you've not read these other books, then read them first, plus David Anderson's Kanban book, which has since come out too. Then come back and read this book and it will make sense to you.
