Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

More than two hours of preludes--90 in all--may seem too much of a good thing, but put on these discs and you are swiftly drawn into Scriabin's fascinating sound world. The preludes make a long journey from the 1889 of Op.2 No.2 to the 1914 of Op.74, and it is one which constantly captivates. There could be no better opener to this Pandora's Box than that first work of 1889--just a few bars long, but a delightful, gentle taster of what is to come. Scriabin the miniaturist is in his element with this music, and while he is a master of beguiling the ear with beautifully written lyrical material, he never falls into the trap of sameness. You don't get too settled with hypnotically relaxing preludes before he offers a grand wake-up call or cranks up the tempo to exhilarate and enthral. Piers Lane is easily the master of all this, his understated playing of the quieter material particularly pleasing. You get the sense this music is in his blood, and indeed this is his second Scriabin marathon for Hyperion, following "The Complete Etudes" recorded some years ago. The preludes have been well worth waiting for. --Keith Clarke

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice and clear Scriabin., 9 Jun 2010
This review is from: Scriabin: Complete Preludes (Audio CD)
I didn't hear Scriabin like this ever before. It's simply perfect. Piers Lane is superb and precise. He's one of a few performers who embarked on recording this difficult composer. The CD has a nice booklet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth & Colorful Scriabin, 5 Jun 2001
By Hank Drake - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Scriabin: Complete Preludes (Audio CD)
Complete editions of Scriabin are exceedingly rare, even during the age of the CD glut. Piers Lane has previously recorded the complete Etudes, and this 2-CD set is a welcome addition to the catalogue.

Lane is more than up to the task technically and musically. Scriabin's often treacherous left-hand writing is played with clarity and color, and Lane's phrasing is natural sounding. What Lane lacks is the last ounce of temperament, which this music requires in abundance. The diabolical quality which Horowitz and Gavrilov bring to some of these pieces is missing. However, this is a fine set of the Preludes, which range in mood from Chopinesque to apocalyptic.

Recorded sound is a bit too reverberant, but acceptable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, 5 April 2006
By J. A. Bradley - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Scriabin: Complete Preludes (Audio CD)
As an amateur pianist of moderate+ ability, I have often struggled with many of the Scriabin preludes, both from a technical and an interpretive viewpoint. However, I always found them worth the effort. Unfortunately, there haven't been too many recordings of these (other than the op. 11, of which I have very good LPs of Ruth Laredo and Vladamir Horowitz), so I was entirely on my own for the later pieces.

How wonderful it was to find this recording of the complete preludes! I must disagree with the earlier reviewer that Lane is lacking; I thought these were fine performances (I can also highly recommend his recording of the complete etudes).

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Preludes for Piano, 27 Jan 2012
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Scriabin: Complete Preludes (Audio CD)
Complete Preludes for Piano is a Hyperion Records recording from 2000 starring pianist Piers Lane. Mr Lane plays with intense passion and I feel that he truly understands the music of Scriabin. Simon Nicholls has written the music notes and also included is a short biography of Mr. Lane. A very beautiful painting is on the cover. A very good choice. A very enjoyable recording indeed. I loved it. Highly recommended. 5/5.
