5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating - and wonderful... 6 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is a whole world of exploration in advanced love making. For beginners, it represents a Pandora's box of surprises and I hope excitement.
I found the layout to be well thought out, a gentle introduction which feeds the mind with ideas, followed by advanced technique. For the DIYers out there, there is an introduction to making your own toys and lots of resource information in the back.
The authors comment frequently on the importance of communication and understanding by both partners - especially when setting out on this adventure.
In some ways, the technique is almost secondary, I think most readers, once they accept that they have more than a passing interest, will have a good idea of what pushes their buttons. The book handles the less tangible aspects of SM very well, reassurance for those unsure of their feeling, advice for those who are trying SM for the first time and useful tips for partners already involved and enjoying SM.
I found this book to be a revelation, very refreshing, reassuring in many ways. A few things made me blink in surprise, some was absolutely fascinating; much of the content can be adapted and intensified with little extra preparation to suit individual taste.
I particularly liked the humour, the style. A good manual for everyone. I commend it to the House!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bdsm Book Ive Read!! 5 Mar 2003
This is without doubt my best investment in furthering my knowledge of the BDSM scene. The humour is top knotch but the wealth of information found within these pages is immesurable when compared to simular books. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone new to BDSM or just wanting to expand thier knowledge to buy this before anything else!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and realistic. 28 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Screw the Roses...is one of the first instructional books I've read dealing with the whole BDSM scene. Mostly, what I know about the whole scene is from reading books like "Breaking the Girl" or "The Story of O". While fiction is a good way to ease into it, I found this book was more realistic and informative. It really has a great sense of humour as well. If you're into it or just curious, I'd give this one a go. The authors really knows their stuff and take a more lighthearted approach.

A well written, well thought out book on the subject of SadoMasochism (or BDSM or Dom/Sub ... whatever title you choose). Of course it's impossible to agree entirely with everything stated in any book - but for the begginer, the curious, the enthusiast, there really is nothing better to tell you what BDSM is REALLY about.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was a "classic" for BDSM right away! 22 Dec 1997
By A Customer
"Screw The Roses; Send Me The Thorns" is a fantastic book from two active members of the scene. The late Philip Miller, and his submissive Molly Devon wrote this *must* have book. They are familiar with eachother and the scene, with a twist of sardonic humor yet with a sensitive manner. They approach the issues at hand in a humoristic and warm way. Never does a person feel as if they are being "talked down to."
For those that are new/novice, to those that are senior members - this book provides a constant stream of information that is constantly updated. The book takes the basics, and gives the reader those definitions and explanations that will enable them to learn. Next, more information is then given for those that want to continue to explore. A fantastic reference book for those that are interested in gaining accurate information!
Fantastic series of resource listings in the back of the book! [re: BBS's, Periodicals, Groups & Organizations, Leather Resources [stores], Leather Resources [support], etc.]

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book, nicely put together 27 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent book, and a marvellous companion to SM101, which is also worth a read.
This one reads like a book, while SM101 is more of an instruction manual.
This one doesn't have much psychology, just plain information, which may not suit someone who doesn't understand their feelings, but is fine for the person at ease with their feelings but not knowing how to tie knots ...

A wonderful introduction to BDSM or a helpful resource for the more advanced? Look no further, this book guides both Dom(me)s and subs through every aspect of a BDSM relationship. Opinionated and factual, relevant and intelligently humorous, the darker side of desire is explored, probed and caressed by Philip and Molly to give a truly outstanding work. Features like knots, rope harnesses, making your own equipment, correct methods of using floggers and even a complete breakdown of the male and female anatomy with target areas and places to avoid clearly marked all add up to the most comprehensive guide to the lifestyle there is.
