Product Description

Whenever Helen Croydon mentions that marriage and kids just aren’t on her radar, everyone tells her that she’ll become ‘one of old ladies with lots cats’. But what, she asks, is so wrong with that? Cats don’t have boring in-laws that take entire weekends and they don’t soak the bathroom and scribble on walls either, do they?

Just what is obsession with white weddings and 2.4 children anyway? For the first time in history, long-term relationships are no longer a necessity, but a luxury. Yet you’re still deemed a failure if you don’t meet The One, and worse if you’re not even looking in the first place!

Just because you don’t want to share your home and bed with a significant other, it doesn’t mean love is out of the question but perhaps, like Helen, the shackles of commitment are not for you.

Join her as she goes on a quest to find a more realistic approach to romance to fit with today’s independent lifestyles and to discover what works and what doesn’t along the way.

Through hilarious anecdotes from her own love life to undercover missions , including a meeting for sex addicts, a ‘wife-finding’ tour to Ukraine and staying in a polyamorous commune in The Highlands along with fascinating interviews with anthropologists, psychologists, swingers, sperm donor mothers and more, journalist Helen debunks the fairytale myth that finding true love is our only route to Utopia.

More About the Author

Helen Croydon is a best-selling author, journalist and broadcaster, specialising in topics surrounding modern relationships, women's issues and health. She's best known for her immersive journalism, investigations and comment pieces.

Her latest book Screw the Fairytale: A Modern Girl's Guide to Sex and Love looks at modern models of relationships as alternatives to conventional marriage. Not keen on the idea of marriage and kids herself, Helen questions whether the life-long, 24-7 model of conventional relationships is still what we want in our fast-paced independent world.

Her first book Sugar Daddy Diaries, became a best-seller. It is a confessional memoir charting her experiences - some funny, some shocking, on so-called sugar daddy websites. She is also author of 100 Lessons on Sex - part of the new '100 Lessons in 100 words' eBook series.

She writes regularly for The Times, Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Mail, and various magazines. She appears on various TV and radio shows as a commentator both on general news stories and relationship related stories.

Before being freelance, Helen worked as a producer and reporter for ITN, after ditching a previous career as a tax accountant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monogamy Is Not For Everyone 10 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Once again, British journalist Helen Croydon sets out to challenge the societal norm of long-term monogamy, mixing personal experience and anecdotes with investigative research into alternative lifestyles, often with hilarious results. I laughed out loud when she described being offered a bed in the "orgy room" of a commune in Scotland. She looks through the history of marriage and different types of relationships and arrangements, seeking to prove her point that not everyone needs to fit into the "one-size-fits-all" model of monogamy and producing offspring.

The thing about Helen Croydon's approach that makes it so interesting is that she really is not that "alternative" of a person. if you see her discussing news stories on Sky News or if you read her memoir or articles, she comes across as highly mainstream: attractive, educated, interested in pop culture, with a solid family background and relationships (this book contains many references to spending time with her married sister's family). So it's not easy to dismiss her rejection of traditional relationships as someone outside the mainstream. She IS the mainstream and the mainstream is changing along with modern society.

I found the subject matter interesting and the writing style to be a great combination of journalistic rigour along with a very relatable human side. Another winning book from one of my favourite journalists in Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE - WHEN IT ALTERATION FINDS 4 Jun 2014
In this book, British journalist Helen Croydon, who admits to being, as she puts it, a "singleton" (i.e., a person, whether in a relationship or not, who insists on retaining the freedoms and flexibie lifestyle unique to unattached single people in society) sets out on a trek to discover the varieties of "unconventional" relationships people have devised to address their needs, wants, and desires.

In 16 chapters, Croydon explores with both the critical eye of a social anthropologist and the wide-eyed curiosity of an eager onlooker, the various permutations of relationships little known or quietly discussed in polite society. Some examples of these relationships are -

1) asexual relationships in which both people have no interest in sex, but in bonding with someone who seeks a non-sexual loving relationship)

2) polyamorous relationships (in one chapter, Croydon relates the experiences she had in Scotland with 17 people --- all but one of them women --- who have managed successfully to forge and maintain over time a strong, loving and sustainable relationship while living together under one roof and sharing responsibilities)

3) Couples who "swing"
4) Couples who live apart (e.g. Croydon interviewed one married couple in which the man lives and works in the UK while his wife lives and works in the Netherlands)

5) Couples devoted to the BDSM lifestyle (which has its own unique categories)

Frankly, I was amazed to learn how people across countries and cultures could manage to live together (or apart) in loving relationships that I had no idea existed or were possible to maintain. Maybe that reflected a certain naivety I've had about relationships.
