Book Description

A comprehensive training course in screen acting by an internationally renowned teacher and acting coach who has worked with actors of all backgrounds and experience - from drama school students at the start of their careers to Hollywood stars, including Daniel Craig, Angelina Jolie and Keira Knightley.

Structured as a series of five workshops, Mel Churcher takes you step by step through the process of creating, developing and delivering assured performances on screen. Online video clips, linked to throughout the book, show you all the work in action, allowing you to participate in the exercises as you progress through the workshops at your own pace.

  • Workshop 1: Keeping the Life encourages you to find what is unique about yourself and how you can preserve this vitality when acting on screen
  • Workshop 2: Inhabiting the Role focuses on the emotional and psychological steps required in preparing your performance
  • Workshop 3: The Physical Life introduces a series of practical exercises to develop the physicality and imagination of the actor
  • Workshop 4: Through the Eye of the Camera explains the technical skills you must master to act in front of a lens
  • Workshop 5: Off to Work We Go covers how to prepare for auditions and then how to handle specific challenges when you get the job

Each exercise, technique and tip is vividly illustrated in the clips by footage from the author's actual workshops. The result is a vital masterclass in every aspect of acting on screen.

With a Foreword by Jeremy Irons.

When the whole business seems to have gone loopy, dip into Mel Churcher's book; somehow she always makes sense. --Bob Hoskins

One of those rare things, a book written for a specific purpose but which contains truth and facts which go far beyond what it says on the cover...The whole package is eminently approachable, direct, entertaining and perceptive; the DVD is smoothly edited, explicit and professional. The written text is substantial, with lots of extra information and exercises plainly laid out and easy to find... a joy' --Communicating Voice, British Voice Association

This book is not just exclusively for those who would be screen actors, but for all those, both teachers and actors, who wish to find 'truth' within the role they have been given. The plus is the DVD, which is a joy to watch and a 'gift' for all those teachers of drama. --Word Matters

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Addition To An Actors Library 31 Mar. 2015
By Dee Dee
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Mel Churcher knows her subject well. This is a gem of a book that makes you aware of the skill involved in screen acting, prep before you're on set, keeping your focus when you are bombarded with potential distractions, some you should take note of and others ignore, working without an audience to gauge your performance and how to be mindful of the editing process so your performance is seamless even when shot out of chronological order. This scratches the surface of the contents of this comprehensive book. The added DVD gets you closer to the practical on-hand study acting demands. Jeremy Irons explains, in the foreword, how there is nowhere to hide when on camera, and this book helps to make sure you don't have to.

By Klingsor Tristan VINE VOICE
You suddenly realise what absolute sense it makes for a book on Film Acting actually to show you what it means every step of the way. In fact, you wonder how any book on the subject could ever have done without visual illustrations of the points it's making.

Mel Churcher's new book, her second on film acting, does exactly that. It comes with a DVD that is nearly an hour and half long and includes dozens of very specific examples that vividly illustrate the arguments she makes in the book and the exercises she suggests to improve your film-acting craft. And these are not those slightly arch and artificial clips, filmed specially for the DVD - all these clips are taken from Mel's actual workshops that she runs regularly in the UK and abroad.

As for the book itself, it is exemplary in the thorough course it gives you in the art and the craft of film acting. It offers a proper five-day (or, at least, five section) workshop that concentrates all the experience she has gained on the sets of many major movies as well as the workshops she has run with actors.

Mel Churcher is one of the top acting, voice and dialogue coaches in the country and she's worked with some of the biggest names in the business. It's hardly surprising, then, that the insights this book gives you into special nature of acting for the camera - be it for movies or TV and which is so different from theatre acting - is second to none. Whether you think of yourself as a novice or an experienced screen actor, there is so much you'll learn from this book and DVD that will put you in good stead when you find yourself on set and which will help make your performance so much more assured and more memorable.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hands on guide to screen acting 4 May 2011
Mel Churcher's A Screen Acting Workshop is, like her first book (Acting For Film, 2003) destined to become a go-to guide for actors whether they are new to the screen or experienced film actors.
It's based on a series of five real and intensely practical workshops given by Mel which guide the actors through the process of creating, developing and delivering performances for the camera. The workshops also address the audition process and handling the challenge of the job once you land it.
In the back of the book is a 90 minute dvd (in both PAL and NTSC formats, making it wonderfully portable)which is designed to be watched in conjunction with reading each chapter of the book and the two also complement each other with a series of excellent practical exercises. The combination of the book and the dvd make this a fantastic at home masterclass from one of the UK's premier film acting and voice coaches.
The extracts on the dvd are not purposely set up for the camera, rather they emerged organically from Mel's workshops and as such have a genuine, spontaneous quality, and contain invaluable nuggets of information for the actor. The book has over 250 pages and is packed with information, making it a volume actors will want to read and refer to time and time again.
Mel is passionate about film, all about the work and never about the artifice that many leading international coaches tend to affect. She has a superb gift of bringing out the very best in every actor who's lucky enough to work with her. Through this unique book and dvd, many more actors will be able to benefit from her insight and expertise. I highly recommend this package.

Essential reading if you're wanting to work in film and television. So much common sense and relevant information. Not just worth a read, but a must for the actor's toolbox.

Excellent book (and DVD). Plenty of good advice and plenty of examples to note and TRY to emulate. Mel has obviously a good standing in the acting community and has years of experience to pass on. DVD could have been filmed better, however only in so far as the sound was not brilliant at times. That's what you get when you use standard cams to shoot in a studio setting, apart from that you can still hear what is being said and that's the important part here!
