Product Description

CD Description

This collection brings together some of their best work for BBC radio. There are red-hot, vintage studio sessions for DJs Andy Kershaw and Janice Long from 1985 and 1987 respectively, whilst a BBC concert from early ‘85 reveals just what a powerful live band they were from the start. This CD has been released with the full approval and co-operation of the Screaming Blue Messiahs. The CD cover was designed by SBM mainman Bill Carter, and the booklet features photographs from the band’s own archive, plus extensive liner notes. Tracks: BBC Radio 1 ‘In Concert’ Paris Theatre, London 30th March 1985 Good And Gone / Vision And Blues / Growing For Gold / Tracking The Dog / Let's Go Down To The Woods / Happy Home / Holiday Head / President Kennedy's Mile / Destroyer / Wild Blue Yonder / Twin / Cadillac Valentine / Andy Kershaw session 14th June ‘85 Good And Gone / Tracking The Dog / Talking Doll / Janice Long session 4th November ’87 Sweet Water Pools / I Wanna Be A Flintstone / Big Brother Muscle

Live 'n' Screamin' 5 Mar 2009
By Greywolf TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Well, whodathoughtit? Reviewing on Amazon can make a difference. I raved about the Screaming Blue Messiahs three long-deleted CDs, suggesting it was about time, after 20 years, that they got a re-issue. Some other persons of taste agreed, and, lo and behold, we now have two of the original CDs reissued (Bikini Red and Gun Shy). Woohoo! Plus we have this little gem, bringing together a live concert from 1985 and two sessions from '85 and '87, all recorded for BBC Radio 1. The concert is a belter, featuring five tracks not found on any of the band's albums. My favourite of these is 'Tracking the Dog' which combines a typically brilliant Bill Carter guitar riff with great lyrics: "God's little Elvis was coming out of town with a vision of the legend of the lost Blue Messiahs." Yeah!
The CD booklet is a bit of a gem in its own right, giving insight into the history and influences of the band. The latter included Lee Brillaux, the guitar-riffing legend who drove r'n'b band, Dr Feelgood; and, perhaps more surprisingly, Don van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart. The writer describes the earlier band the Messiahs grew out of as "the missing link between the Yardbirds and Pere Ubu," a line that could equally apply to the Messiahs own position in the hierarchy of rock. Add the fact that they have a head-down, full-on, speed-freak boogie and sheer fun approach to rock'n'roll similar to the Ramones and you have the perfect recipe.
My one complaint is that the sound mix on the CD could be better. It doesn't quite do justice to the edge and energy of the band. But that's nit-picking. It's still an absolute joy to have these tracks available. And hey, we can always fix the mix on our computers...
By the way, the Messiahs recorded at least one other concert for the Beeb (in 1988) which is about the closest to rock'n'roll heaven you can get. Maybe the good folks at Hux records might persuade the Beeb to let 'em release that too?

Nice to have some radio one Screaming Blue Messiahs, its been a long time since I've heard these versions.

One thing is bugging me, I seem to recall that the first Screaming Blue Messiahs concert was about 40mins long and I'm not even sure this is that concert. Still you cant complain about the music, (although the inky press did give them a tough ride at the time, and they eventually had to compromise somewhat by label pressure I recall), the thing is, in the mid-80s they really were left by themselves as the mainstream music scene was synth-driven and the indie scene was shooting off in all directions. But now with hindsight we can appreciate them more. If you are keen to here more SBM then check out their earlier incarnation - Motor Boys Motor - they are just as good, maybe even better.

better late than never 26 Feb 2009

I'm ashamed to say it but I completely missed out on the Screaming Blue Messiahs when they first came out. Their cds now cost an arm and a leg (with the exception of TOTALLY RELIGIOUS which I highly recommned)due to their rarity. So this half live in concert/half live in studio set has come to my rescue and gives a great taste of what the band is all about, mainly high octane rock delivered with a wonderful intensity. Now if only some label (Electra?Rhino?Razor and Tie?) would do the right thing and reissue the original studio albums. I know I wouldn't be the only one interested.
