Well, whodathoughtit? Reviewing on Amazon can make a difference. I raved about the Screaming Blue Messiahs three long-deleted CDs, suggesting it was about time, after 20 years, that they got a re-issue. Some other persons of taste agreed, and, lo and behold, we now have two of the original CDs reissued (
Bikini Red and
Gun Shy). Woohoo! Plus we have this little gem, bringing together a live concert from 1985 and two sessions from '85 and '87, all recorded for BBC Radio 1. The concert is a belter, featuring five tracks not found on any of the band's albums. My favourite of these is 'Tracking the Dog' which combines a typically brilliant Bill Carter guitar riff with great lyrics: "God's little Elvis was coming out of town with a vision of the legend of the lost Blue Messiahs." Yeah!
The CD booklet is a bit of a gem in its own right, giving insight into the history and influences of the band. The latter included Lee Brillaux, the guitar-riffing legend who drove r'n'b band, Dr Feelgood; and, perhaps more surprisingly, Don van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart. The writer describes the earlier band the Messiahs grew out of as "the missing link between the Yardbirds and Pere Ubu," a line that could equally apply to the Messiahs own position in the hierarchy of rock. Add the fact that they have a head-down, full-on, speed-freak boogie and sheer fun approach to rock'n'roll similar to the Ramones and you have the perfect recipe.
My one complaint is that the sound mix on the CD could be better. It doesn't quite do justice to the edge and energy of the band. But that's nit-picking. It's still an absolute joy to have these tracks available. And hey, we can always fix the mix on our computers...
By the way, the Messiahs recorded at least one other concert for the Beeb (in 1988) which is about the closest to rock'n'roll heaven you can get. Maybe the good folks at Hux records might persuade the Beeb to let 'em release that too?
