Book Description

After Luke Watson transforms into a werewolf for the third time, he and his parents are moved by the Government Housing of Unusual Lifeforms (G.H.O.U.L.) to Scream Street – a community of vampires, zombies, witches and more.

Product Description

In Scream Street, Luke and his parents discover a nightmarish world of the undead. Luke soon makes friends with vampire Resus Negative and mummy Cleo Farr, but he remains determined to take his terrified parents home. After liberating the powerful book Tales of Scream Street from his new landlord, Otto Sneer, Luke learns that the founding fathers of the community each left behind a powerful relic. Collecting together all six is his only hope of opening a doorway out of the street, so with the help of Resus and Cleo he sets out to find the first one, the vampire’s fang. But with Otto Sneer determined to thwart him at every turn, will Luke even get past the first hurdle alive?

By S. P. Moses VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is the first in a series of spooky adventures aimed at 7-9 year olds. The lead characters - a werewolf, a vampire and a mummy - are good company. I particularly enjoyed the vampire's cloak, which contains a seemingly endless supply of useful items. There's a basic quest structure, with each book in the series seeing our heroes pursuing a different relic.

This novel contains a strong mix of humour and horror. There are moments of great comic invention, including the time when a skeletal dog gets confused and buries itself. Sadly there is also a chapter featuring flatulent goblins, though no doubt this body-based humour will appeal to the book's target audience. It's difficult to know what will frighten children, but I'd say there's enough terror here to excite, but not enough to disturb.

The pace of this book is so swift there's little room for depth. On the other hand I am intrigued to know how the characters will fare in their quest. The concept of 'Scream Street' - basically where monsters are deported to from our world - is interesting. Perhaps later books will allow a little more time for world building as the glimpses given here are fascinating.

An absolute SCREAM 28 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
Having read this to my six-year-old son, I can say it's definitely not TOO scary. We laughed (both of us), got excited (both of us), and generally loved every minute (both of us).

Had I thought it was too frightening, there's no way I'd have read it as his bed-time story, but I'm happy to report there wasn't a single nightmare. Quite amazingly, for the first time ever he actually asked to go to bed early one night, so we could read the final three chapters.

Other reviewers have given a break-down of the concept, so I won't go into it again here. All I'll say is that both I and my son thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Luke, Resus and Cleo, and we'll definitely be picking up the rest of the series.

Highly recommended.

A little rushed... 1 Oct 2008
By Richard Madgin VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is an interesting idea which I'm sure will appeal to many children, especially boys. However, I don't think the book was well executed... the pace of the story felt a little rushed and plot developments came all too easily. Does the author think that modern day children don't have the patience to finish a longer more in-depth book? Judging by the recent success of the Potter series which grew ever longer as the story progressed I'd question the choice to make this book so brief.

Also I felt that at times the blood and gore talk was over-emphasized and unnecessary. Not that I'm the kind of person that thinks this kind of thing will influence children unduly... it's more than it made the book seem sometime silly. Children will probably love it for the gore though as it will make them think "yuck!".
