5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Intoduction to Scratch 29 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
If you are either new to the world of Hip Hop DJ's and turntablism or "scratching" or you are a well seasoned vet, this DVD is for you. A fantastic display of skill and style, from the old to the new. This DVD will give you great insight in to the culture of scratch. From hip-hop DJ's, rappers, graf-bombers, to break dancers. Interviews and tips from the likes of Africa Bambatta, Grandmixer DXT, DJ QBERT and Mix Master Mike, DJ Premier, The X-Ecutioners, to DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and more. The talent is endless as well as the enjoyment one gets right from the opening credits, to the live performances as well as an informative acompanying "HOW-TO" DVD. This is not just a movie, or a history lesson, it is a tribute to the true heads and those in the world of Hip-Hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Heroes 5 Sep 2004
Format:DVD
This takes you on an indepth walk through the true valleys of hip hop history. Scratch shows true love to the real driving force behing hip hop before it became just anoher commodity. TRUE RESPECT IS PAID TO THE DJ'S.
If you feel that as great as rap music is today, as much as it sounds good...it is loosing its soul. So few MC's show true respect to their Dj's... some dont even have one.
I know its a documentary...but its story of our forgotten heroes. Get this! Show respects. Peace!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where it all began 7 April 2012
By Stunter
Format:DVD
First caught this on Channel 4 fairly soon after release and it just blew me away. The passion that the originators of turntablism had for the music, the breaks and, most importantly of all, keeping the party going really comes through on this excellent film. It's a fascinating insight into how dj-ing moved from the discos of the 70's onto the streets and beyond. The fact that you can now buy this for less than a fiver makes it an absolute no-brainer purchase. Anyone with the slightest interest in music in general would enjoy this: it's not elitist. You don't have to be a vinyl junkie or a bedroom dj: you just have to love music like these guys do. That's what it's all about. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Documenting turntable genius 1 Mar 2011
Format:DVD
If you are into the truly great turntable DJ's then you MUST buy this DVD. It charts the rise in the turntablist phenomenon and has interviews with some of the greats of today, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Z-trip etc and intersperses them with DJ's from back in the day, Steinski, to name but one. The documentary foucuses on what drove these people to do what they do and what it means to them to make a really good record. There is also an additional Scratch DVD which has recorded live performances from Jazzy Jay, Z-Trip, X-ecutioners and Mixmaster Mike. Buy that one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff... 26 Feb 2011

..tells it how it is and how it was. Although focusing on 'Turntablism/scratching' this is, probably, one the best Hip Hop documentaries there is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The History of Turntablism 7 Oct 2010
Format:DVD
Definitive, is the best way to describe this amazing film. Everyone from generation one of hip-hop, Bam, Jazzy Jay etc are here right up to todays heroes such as Q-bert and Mix Master Mike. The film encompasses the entire history of the wikky-wicka sound right through to crate digging with DJ shadow, although the most recent footage is over 10 years old (review in 2010) it is truly inspirational. This film inspired me from beat-matching to trying to be creative on the ones and twos. Not just for the DJ either, I have shown this to none Hip-Hop and Non turntable owners and they are absolutely fascinated with the dedication of those filmed.

Has to been seen just to see how the DJ's advanced their craft while the MC's took the glory, but they didn't care as they are too busy producing their tracks for the MC's and taking the royalties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD if you're into DJ'ing 5 Mar 2010
Format:DVD
I brought this DVD for a friend who is a DJ and found it to be a very good present.
Not only had this friend been raving about it for a long enough period of time, but also its a great DVD and a must have for budding DJ's if their forte is scratching, mixing, sampling, making, anything. Its brilliant.
