Book Description

Scraps is the second anthology from National Flash-Fiction Day. It features more than seventy huge tales told in only a few words.

All of the stories in this collection have been inspired by other works of art: paintings, sculptures, TV programmes, films, music and more. As a result they are imbued with something of the original, but then take off into new and often surprising directions.

Scraps features stories from Jenny Adamthwaite, Jenn Ashworth, Oliver Barton, Alan Beard, Natalie Bowers, Cathy Bryant, Joanna Campbell, Nuala Ní Chonchúir, James Coates, Claire Collison, Chris Connolly, L.A. Craig, Judy Darley, Ariel Dawn, Vanessa Gebbie, Kylie Grant, David Gullen, David Hartley, Kevlin Henney, Tania Hershman, Sarah Hilary, H Anthony Hildebrand, Eva Holland, Holly Howitt, Thaddeus Howze, Anouska Huggins, Claire Ibarra, Paul Kavanagh, RM Kealy, John Keating, Calum Kerr, Clare Kirwan, Mark Kockelbergh, Emma J. Lannie, Cathy Lennon, Beverly C. Lucey, Amy Mackelden, R A Martens, Ana Martinez, Thomas McColl, Stephen McGeagh, Danielle McLaughlin, Siobhán McNamara, Freya Morris, Andrea Mullaney, Clay Norman, John Paul O'Neill, Sonya Oldwin, Jim O'Loughlin, Amanda Oosthuizen, Jonathan Pinnock, Dan Powell, Amanda Quinn, Eabha Rose, Sam Russell, Shelley Day Sclater, Emma Shaw, Ian Shine, Diane Simmons, Tim Stevenson, Becky Tipper, Stella Turner, Tracey Upchurch, Bart Van Goethem, Alison Wells and Brendan Way.

Funny, sad, exciting, intriguing, experimental and traditional, Scraps is a snapshot of the best in contemporary flash fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking bites 28 Aug. 2013
You won't be disappointed by your read of this book. I was surprised by the high quality of the 70+ stories in miniature. It takes a special skill to write something that resonates with readers in less than one page.

Each story is worthy of mention so it seems hardly fair to pick out only a few. I found memorable the over-greased sunbather, the murder in the desert, the tree women, Helen's heart-rending Art, Margaret's apple pie, less than a handful of grey grit like tobacco, the death of Mary's Mum, the `faces' of a relationship, Jeremy's slurp out of an antique bowl and the thoughts of the tree, bridge and boat.

You will have to read the book to discover which stories I refer to. This is my way of being fair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scraps of Gold 30 Nov. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Glimpses of life arose from the pages! Windows of illumination exposed from writers of all backgrounds and abilities. It encouraged me and others to write our own Scraps. It is fun to read but also contains poignant and heartbreaking flashes. Recommend to anyone who wants to learn about writing and different styles of expressing impressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Life 6 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a little biased as one of my flash-fictions is included in this anthology but I think its a great showcase for tiny little stories. One story 'The meaning of Life' is so tiny it has only one word but that word makes you think and I can imagine great discussions resulting from it. If you've never read flash before then this is a good start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection 4 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
these are fantastic stories, there is Flash fiction but also micro fiction and very short stories. There's even a story that has only one line, a bit like the work of Lydia Davies.
