Book Description

1 Feb 2005 Cicerone British Mountains
The second of a two-volume set of guides to scrambles in the Lake District, based on two original scrambling guides to the Lake District by one of Britain's best-known climbers, Brian Evans fully updated and merged into two definitive guides, for southern and northern Lakes. The Lake District's rich mix of rocks, gills and crags offers the scrambler a complex variety of routes, often well removed from the beaten track. Scrambling - ascending rock that is not usually difficult or steep enough to warrant the term 'rock climbing' - means you often hardly touch a path and rarely see other people at close quarters. This is a way of getting back to a wilder Lakeland and enjoying the freedom of rough mountain country. The guide covers Wasdale, Ennerdale and Buttermere, Borrowdale, Thirlmere, Patterdale, Mardale and Swindale in 110 scramble routes graded 1 to 4. Also included: advice on how to approach scrambling safely and with confidence; overview maps as well as sketch diagrams of the crags and routes; introductions to each area mentioned, indicating the type of rock and any recommendations; and information on the approach, character, grade and route of each scramble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lake District Scrambles 25 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
If you want a bit of extra excitement out of Lake District walking, this is a great book. Accurate and expert on both location and waymarking. Excellent companion to the Wainwright Logbooks and an excellent way of discovering additional facets to the Lake District away from the usual crowds and well-trodden routes.

This is a brilliant book and should be owned by all climbers and scramblers as it provides routes which I didnt know existed even after all my years spent in the lakes. Its a great way to see another side to the lake district

This book is really nicely laid out, and offers a comprehensive rating system for the routes. This includes a difficulty rating (from 1 to 4) but also a quality rating (from 0 stars to 3 stars) which means that if you have limited time, you can focus on the 'classics' to make the most of your trip.

The routes are well described, and the book has a nice section at the start outlining some of the scrambling basics.

My only reservation, and the reason for giving 4 rather than 5 stars, is the maps. Each route is laid out with a sketch map, which is OK but not particularly accurate. Other books in the series, such as the Peak District scrambles, include mini-OS maps with the route laid out on top, These are a lot easier to read and mean the book can be referred to for a quick route check rather than unfolding the map! A minor quibble, but certainly an area to improve.

Overall though, a great book for those looking to do something other than walking in the Lakes.

Although too old to do many of these, its interesting to see how others have tackled it !

A well laid out book, as are all in this series,
