Product Description

Product Description

The Scottish Weather is rich in variety, full of lights and shades, drama, romance and beauty. We have snow in winter, sunshine in summer, strong winds in spring and autumn and all four seasons can happen in one day. But, at least when it rains, the Scots tongue has myriad words to cheer you up while you are getting drenched. In Scottish Weather, Chris Robinson and Eileen Finlayson take a tour of the country to discover how we describe our weather conditions from coast to country and town to city. The weather is a constant topic of conversation in all our communities so whether it's dreich, smirry, hairst or simmer, Scottish Weather will help explain the weather around you.

Great fun 30 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Bought it as a stocking present. I found it great fun to read - how may different words can they have for rain! I thought rain was just wet! Even if you are not a student of language it is a very good entertaining read.

Distilled but digestible Scottish... 25 Dec 2008
By Robert F. Rauktis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
just like the whisky. I was sent this little gem as a Christmas present from my Scottish girlfriend who knows I love geography and philology. It tells you just enough without being arcane with academics. The place name terminology apply here in the good ole U.S. of A. as well as over there.

I like to look at maps and travel books to mentally image a place, even if I don't visit (frequently I do.) The origin of place names is ancient and romantic and further crystallizes my travel fantasies.

I started with "thumb-through' intentions and ended up reading this cover to cover.
