Not many composers have worked with Elvis Presley, Cliff Richards, The Dubliners, and Planxty. Such is the strange musical world of Phil Coulter, who has recorded a series of Tranquility records that emphasize lush orchestral arrangements of various national folk music from Ireland to America, and on this title, Scotland. "Lush" is the operative word here, as he spins classic Scots melodies like "Ye Banks and Braes" and "Auld Lang Syne" into Mantovani-like flourishes for piano and orchestra, punched up with a fuzzy but gentle electric guitar and drums to give it "punch". It's the apex of Celtic nostalgia, and you will love it or hate it based solely on your tolerance for lots of airy strings, rippling piano lines, and reverbed, mountainous flute sounds. Coulter has had a lot of gold and platinum recordings over the years, so there's plenty of fans for his Celtic lounge act. --Louis Gibson
I downloaded this cd to accompany a dvd I had compiled of a recent trip to Scotland - it was perfect. All the traditional Scottish melodies we love but more subtle, somehow, very easy to listen to which is important when a dvd is played over and over again. Very pleased with the result.

If you like soft piano music, you'll love this CD. It is very well done. Being Scottish melodies, I expected more bagpipes, but they only show up on the last song. This CD is definitely a good buy. I listen to it every evening while I'm studying, or reading for pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 starsAt last! A new turn on some old Scotish tunes.25 May 2001

I have a large number of CD's with Celtic tunes. All too often, they are similar to one another. Phil Coulter surprises with covers of Loch Lomond, Scotland the Brave, and Auld Lang Syne that are not like any I've heard before. In addition there are a dozen more new and familiar New Age style Celtic tunes. Scotland the Brave sounds just as majestic and is perhaps even more stirring to the soul presented Coulter's way, with bagpipes muted and in support of the lead piano.
