5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing then-and-now comparisons 28 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book is not cheap, even at Amazon marketplace prices, so what do you get for your money. Just over 250 pages long and `coffee table' size, the book is divided into seven sections, one for each of the pre-1922 groupings of companies. This makes great sense to an enthusiast but is otherwise confusing. Given the small size of some of the companies (such as the Dundee and Arbroath Joint Railway) this means there are effectively five chapters, although the Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Railway does come in at a very respectable 10 pages!
Each page has 2 and sometimes 3 photos, the formats either being a before photo at the opt and after (the late 1990s) below or three before photos on the left hand page and three matching after photos on the right hand side. The captions are helpful and demonstrate the author's huge knowledge of his subject.
If you are a general reader like me then your interest will vary through the book. It's easiest to relate to the places you know, like the cities and specific lines. Of course, the before and after format lends itself best to fairly dramatic changes but with a single common reference point and there are some terrific examples so a station site such as Hyndland in the west of Glasgow works really well. The comparison of Princes Street Station in Edinburgh even had me making a detour the next time I was in the city, so unbelievable was the difference.
The photos of St Enochs in Glasgow were poignant, if familiar, but I also enjoyed seeing the comparisons of less-familiar places such as the station at Biggar (and of course you can try to track down the up-to-date photos online using sites such as Flickr).
Most of the before photos are from the period 1950-1970, so they show mainly steam trains with the early examples of diesels.
