Product Description

Synopsis

Scotland boasts a landscape of stunning coastlines and awe-inspiring islands. With some of the most dangerous coastal waters in the world, however, such breathtaking scenery comes at a price. Lighthouses have played a significant part in the history of this country, which is so heavily dependent on the sea for its livelihood. Scottish Lighthouses is a beautifully illustrated and insightful tour of 31 magnificent lights, built over the last two centuries to protect ships from the perilous coastline. Because Scotland has led the way in maintaining lighthouse stations, most of the buildings described here are, happily, still both functional and in excellent condition.

Very disappointing 13 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I found this book initially very attractive but on reading it I found it to be full of inaccuracies. The lack of proper sound research is only made clear if the reader actually knows the sites described intimately. However it is very important that such research is conducted properly before going to print - in one case the directions described to reach a lighthouse could lead the reader into danger. I wrote to the author to inform her of that inaccuracy, via the publisher, but did not receive the courtesy of a reply. Enjoy the pictures but do not rely on the information!

Sharma has certainly done her homework with the excellent pictorial book on Scottish Lighthouses. She has provided the reader with factual data about the lighthouses she has covered and, she has also made it all make sense by providing some of the best photographs of Scottish Lighthouses I've seen. To anyone interested in Scottish Lighthouses this book is an absolute must. Owning one of the largest photographic libraries on Scottish Lighthouses I only wish some of the photographs in her book were mine. Well Done Sharma and please cover the rest of the Lighthouses which your book didn't cover. I'll be the first in the queue to buy it.!!!! RATING 15 out of 10. EXCELLENT!
