Book Description

1 Aug 2012
It's Not All About The Old Firm tells the inside stories of some of the Scottish game's greatest achievements by clubs outside of Glasgow. Heroes and legends unite to share their stories of overcoming the odds and adversity, recalling how they helped their clubs step out of Rangers' and Celtic's shadows. Covering every league title, European, Scottish Cup and League Cup victory from Sir Alex Ferguson's time at Aberdeen to Dundee United's Scottish Cup heroics of 2010, the triumphs of Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Raith Rovers, St Mirren, Dundee United, Livingston, Hibs and Hearts are relived by the history makers themselves. Players such as Alex McLeish, Willie Miller, Paul Lambert, Jimmy Nicholl, Steven Fletcher, Jim Jefferies and David Goodwillie offer unique insights into their greatest footballing moments. Behind-the-scenes stories from each club's glory run involve stays in haunted hotels, dressing room and tunnel bust-ups and betting scandals - climaxing in unforgettable victories.

Review

**One of The Scotsman's Best Scottish Sport Reads of 2012**

"Terrific!" --Daily Star Sunday

"A special read. It offers up stories and a focus you won't find anywhere else. It takes the back road through Scottish footballing history, getting past the Old Firm [and]gets to the heart of football in Scotland. This is a must have for all those who love the beautiful game. It is about the battle of David and Goliath and the fact that games are played on the pitch, not in popularity polls." --InternationaSoccerNetwork.com

"An excellent book detailing the trophy wins from non Old Firm teams since the 1980s. It gives an insight to what the players and managers involved were thinking at the time and how they made it happen." --Flower of Scotland

"It's an achievement in itself to manage to cram so many seasons into just under 300 pages, and yet still not give the book the feeling it has glossed over anything. To be fair to Burns, he couldn't have added much more, and the book is clearly a labour of love that attempts to showcase everything that is great about our game. It's well worth a read, and for those who dream every season that our team can finally end that trophy drought or even recreate the club's glory days, this book will have you dreaming again." --The Away End

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Footballing Read 18 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a good book for those who enjoy the idea that there are more than two teams in Scotland. In recent decades it would have to be said that the performances of non-Old Firm teams have been woeful, with a particular tendency to "blow up" in the League competition, sometimes after a good start, to sell players irrespective of the wishes of their supporters whose intelligence they sometimes insult with "market forces" and "we didn't want to stand in his way" sort of claptrap, and to collapse pitifully in Europe - and then wonder why they are not well supported by their community! This book tries to redress the balance to a certain extent, and the author has done a good job in collating material. The photographs are good, but there is perhaps an over-reliance on players' memories - some of which are faulty and most of which are economical with the truth on occasion. Some funny stories, some less than totally believable ones like the ghosts which bothered Raith Rovers at a hotel in the Cleish Hills, but the narrative is always punchy and those who wish to recall their own team's triumphs will enjoy reading the relevant chapters. A good book for most football supporters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good well researched book 19 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A most absorbing read, read about the success of teams outside of the old firm, filled with fascinating players nd managers views. The only down side is that it did not go back to the 1950's and 60's to reflect on the league successes of Killie, Dundee, Hibs and Hearts, still well worth a read.

Excellent look at the glory of teams outside the old firm. It is not biased against Rangers or Celtic but so much is written about their achievements that this is a nice read about other teams winning trophies. Especially when two chapters are based on Kilmarnock cup victories.
