Informative account in short stories of the Covenanters,
By iain.doole@lineone.net (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scottish Covenanter Stories: Tales from the Killing Time (Paperback)
This book is a jewel of short stories about the terrible days in South West Scotland, when it was a crime to worship outwith the recognised church. Dane Love has written his book around the characters of the period, with each tragic story emphasising the terrible cruelty and "mans inhumanity to man". Each short account includes local OS Map references, to allow the reader to visit battle sites and monuments in South West Scotland where all the atrocities were committed. A good informative read.

Tall Tales of the Covenanters,
By Ombra (Naples, Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scottish Covenanter Stories: Tales from the Killing Time (Paperback)
I read the book as a innocent visitor in Scotland, and one very interested in Scottish history. The terrible years of the "killing times" have been my focus for some time. To my horror, however, I found in this book no more that the repetition of the endless lies and uncorrect informations, such are now widely disproved by true and dispassionate Historians. It is disgraceful, it is a shame to put a stain on the memory of men, long ago in their graves, who cannot speak in their own defense, even when Historians speak for them. I found all the volume extremely biased and in some part merely offensive. Truth is not in the least important to this writer, for I cannot think that he really don't knows what lies he is telling. I can accept it only as a book of stories, for centuries told and rehersed around the fireplace of old Covenanting families in Scotland's western shires. No more than that, and with a flavour of hatred that shocked me.
I suggest, for a correct vision of the Killing Times, the impeccable books by Prof. Sanford Terry about John Grahame of Claverhouse and Covenanting General Leslie.

Vignettes from Scottish History,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Scottish Covenanter Stories: Tales from the Killing Time (Paperback)
Very few books discuss in any great detail the persecution of the Scottish Covenanters during the 1670s and 1680s, the so-called "Killing Times". In fact, this book is the only one I could find currently in print and readily available that did so. It is a well-written collection of stories, each of which is long enough to explain a particular martyrdom and the events leading up to it, yet short enough to hold the reader's attention. I would give it another star or two except, quite frankly, a quarter of the way through the book I started getting tired of reading about one shooting, hanging, or beheading after another. Still, I feel it is an important book and a valuable addition to the library of any student of Scottish history.

Scottish Covenantor Stories: Tales from the Killing Times,
By Evelyn Bromwich "storyteller" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Scottish Covenanter Stories: Tales from the Killing Time (Paperback)
It was an interesting book on Scotland and the Covenantors. It was little on the dry side for the writing. But still held my interest for it was what I was researching for my lineage and my genealogy..the Covenantors.
