Like many people, I was introduced to the ragtime music of Scott Joplin through the 1973 film "The Sting". All those years ago I bought the soundtrack album and enjoyed it. The subsequent purchase of an album of pianist Joshua Rifkin performing Scott Joplin songs was disappointing as I had liked the orchestral versions of his piano rags that were in the movie. This album is great. It has many orchestrated arrangements similar to those few from the Marvin Hamlisch film score and is great fun to listen to.

This seems to be a compilation of two LPs ("Magnetic Rag" and "Ragtime Classics"). Unfortunately there hasn't been room on the CD for all the tracks from both the LPs. Thus we have lost "Magnetic Rag" and "Lily Queen" from the "Magnetic Rag" LP, and "Sunflower Slow Drag" arranged for piano solo from the "Ragtime Classics" LP.

A must for anyone who apreciates Ragtime 7 Jan. 2000
By Frederick L. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Anyone who apreciates the Ragtime music of Scott Joplin should own a copy of the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. I grew up listening to an old cassette recording of the Ensemble and was so excited to find that a CD was still available. It is wonderful and exciting to hear Ragtime played by an entire enseble of instuments, rather than just a piano. Once again, a must for any lover of Ragtime.

Some wonderful pieces in this collection 1 Oct. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Two words..."Bink's Waltz" worth the price of admission here. While an entire CD of these songs begins to feel strident, this music is very evocative--a brave wash of gaiety over sadness. A good addition to any collection of "American" music. Hope the Ragtime Conservatory records more. J. Makil

Not your usual Joplin 25 July 2008
By Timothy P. Koerner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Here is music by the most prominent American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin, performed in a manner (11-12 instruments) slightly different from the usual (solo piano). The program contains 60 minutes of the familiar (and, in a couple instances, the unfamiliar) Joplin music that became popular at the turn of the 20th century, then fell into oblivion, and had a revival in the early 1970s.

This cd brings together two lps released by EMI/Angel during that '70s revival: "Red Back Book" containing 8 selections performed by students from the New England Conservatory conducted by Gunther Schuller; and "Elite Syncopations", which includes 8 pieces featuring pianist Ralph Grierson with the Southland Stingers.

All of the music is well performed and recorded. This listener especially likes track 6 ("Easy Winners") because of the numerous solos and track 13 ("Bink's Waltz") because, as a waltz, it is a nice departure
from the rag format and also because it was unfamiliar.

Although I think it is sad that Scott Joplin died at the age of 48 with his musical goals not totally achieved, his toe tapping music lives on and never fails to cheer me up.

Cover art is the same but this is not the same as the 1973 LP 23 Jun. 2013

In comparing the songs on the 1973 LP, which are by The New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, to this CD, I notice that the piano solo versions of Sun Flower Slow Drag and The Entertainer have been left out. This CD also features the addition of Southland Stingers who are not anywhere on the LP I have. Not that it's a bad thing. I was just hoping for an exact CD version of the LP I have. Will probably buy this anyway to get the remastered versions of the majority of the songs that ARE included and The Southland Stingers sound pretty good. The absence of the Sun Flower Slow Drag piano solo (my favorite!) on this CD however, is a glaring omission and a sad loss.

Update: After listening to this CD I find that I love it. The Southland Stingers addition is a big plus.

Delightful music, Delightful remastering, short a couple songs 30 Aug. 2012
By Michael Pepper - Published on Amazon.com
I've had the tape of the mid-70s Schuller recording since all the way back when it was released. It was a delight then and is more of delight in the remastered form and without the old tape anti-hiss compression. Right from the fountains in "The Cascades" this version is more open and exciting.

The combination with the Southland Stingers recording makes for a great bargain, but is a little confusing to listen to. Happily the tracks are not arbitrarily tossed together, but kept in two discrete and easily separable groups if you're not in the mode for both. The mode and the mood are different enough that it can be jarring.

The two recordings are full of statement pieces; by the composer and by the music director and by the band members. The junction of "Maple Leaf Rag" by the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble and "Elite Syncopations" played by the Southland Stingers is less a segue and more a battle of the ragtime bands throwdown.

But.. that's just me.

One thing though, for Amazon or whomever tagged these tracks; these are not genre "Pop". Unless, say, Amazon is genre "candy store".
