5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice for people new to digital SLRs, 6 Feb 2009
By A. J. Gilbert (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought a Canon 450D (superb, by the way) a couple of months ago, having been a point-and-clicker until then (and playing around with friends' and family's cameras). I wanted a book that allowed me to make the jump in photo quality that I expected to get when upgrading to an SLR.

Having read all the reviews of these books (individually) I was very nearly put off by the criticisms of the writing style, but am very glad I ignored those and bought them anyway.

The books are great. Each page tells you something you can use to make your next photo better. It's not in jargon, doesn't go into techy detail, just tells you what settings you need to achieve the image you're after. I've learned a lot and have already seen the results in the pictures I'm now taking.

The big complaint about the author is the cheesy humour and yes, this is definitely there and is certainly irritating. It's an American book, written for an American audience. But it's only words and (as he says) he gets most of it out of his system in the first chapter.

I would heartily recommend that if, like me, you're relatively new to SLRs you should take a deep breath, ignore the 'yuks' and read these excellent books...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners..., 25 Jun 2009
I purchased these books in the hope of getting some insights into the industry and the "secrets" it promises.

As someone who has been into photography for 2 years, I will be honest I didnt learn a huge amount, but what I did learn was valuable all the same. Despite these books not being as valuable for me I can see that for a beginner they would be great.

If you are new to photography, and want to go beyond simple snaps, it will really help you. These are the two books I consistently loan out to any friends who want to improve their photography. Lots of simple easy to understand tips, that really will make a difference if you follow them.

If you are a more advanced photographer, or already own a lot of book, then it will mostly teach you things you already know.

Hence 4 star for beginner, 3 star for more advanced (you will still learn something).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great books for serious amateures, 28 May 2009
By Derick Tait - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have purchased Scott Kelby books before that deal with Photoshop CS3 and Elements etc and have found them to be very straight forward and without the usual techno babble that most of these types of books are filled with. There have been gripes about his jokey approach but to be honest I kind of like this as it lightens the whole learning process. They have proved very useful to me and has helped to improve my photographic and editing skills. If you are looking to learn digital photography and editing skills then look no further than Scott Kelby's books.
