Excellent Corrective 23 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
Ms Craig's book is an excellent (and constructive) corrective to many of the self-constructed fantasies we Scots tend to have. Her comments on the book Being Scottish are quite brilliant, I thought, and her section on Donald Dewar has universal application - we all want a messiah, but we all somehow want to be let down by them also - maybe Scots more than most.

An important and very readable book; wish I'd come across it before.

The Scots Examined 24 Jun 2004
Format:Paperback
As a Scot, I found this book compellingly readable, enlightening and challenging. Carol Craig sweeps across history, religion, psychology, economics and philosophy to analyse the complex nature of the Scot. This is no mere sentimental tartan celebration of all our achievements. She is brave in her criticism and fierce in her desire to improve the lot of the next generation of Scots. She argues for a change to the lethal combination of arrogance and humility that holds many Scots back, while retaining the best traditions of striving for the common good and valuing equality without resenting succes. A good book for Scots wanting to examine themselves and also for non Scots to understand their Scottish friends!

Carol Craig has done some excellent research on the subject of Scottish culture- in particular her observations around the confidence 'crisis' that we find ourselves immersed in are spot on.
