Product Description

Synopsis

From the Celtic sea-farers to the Cutty Sark and the Royal Yacht Britannia - Osborne and Armstrong champion great ships. Combining the ships' histories with their involvement and significance in Scottish life and imagination, this is a unique study of Scotland's oft forgotten maritime legacy. Not just a book for ship enthusiasts, this lavishly illustrated, highly accessible and readable account of Scotland's great ships will capture your imagination and leave you dreaming of life on the high seas.

From the Author

While everyone's selection of what might constitute "Scotland's Great Ships" is going to be different Ronald Armstrong and I hope that our selection will be interesting and intriguing and perhaps also will go a little beyond the most obvious selections. Some ships more or less select themselves - it would be hard to pass over the pioneering Comet - Europe's first commercial steamship, the magnificent Queen Mary or the lovely Cutty Sark- and they get a chapter each. Perhaps less obvious is the first Cunarder, the paddle-steamer Britannia, or HMS Vanguard - Britain's last battleship. Most of our chapters deal with one famous ship - such as HMS Hood or the Lusitania - but others deal with more general topics such as emigrant ships or the puffer.
We hope that readers will find something familiar and something new in this book and will share some of our delight in exploring the rich tradition of Scottish ships - a rich tradition stretching from the earliest Celtic curraghs and birlinns to the present day.

scotlands ships 12 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book on Scotlands ships traces the story of shipbuilding on the Clyde from prehistory to 1971 but really starts with the Great Michael (1507-21
Following a chapter on history, rise and fall of shipbuilding there is a section on Scotlands earliest ships. These are followed by chapters on various ships eg.Lusitania,Hood,Queen Mary and Vanguard. These sections are well written and researched.
There is a good time line but the pictures and illustrations are of very poor quality. The lists of colour plates and illustrations although numbered give no page numbers.
This book is adequate for what it is but the subject requires much more detailed study. It is far too expensive and can not be recommended.

As a Scot in Canada. I found this book very interesting, I remember the large ship building industry in Scotland. Many famous ships connected with celebrities. It is a book of memories and learning of an industry that is now sadly almost gone.
