Product Description

Review

'the book is also a gospel, a love poem to Scotland and a patriotic tract'
The Observer

'Nobody tells it better…All that's wonderful about Scotland is in the book' Daily Express

'Infallible and quite brilliant'
Daily Telegraph

'Makes all other guides to Scotland redundant'
The Sunday Times

'The only guide worth a damn'
The Scotsman

'he has been a driving force in Scottish tourism' Ecosse (Supp. To the Sunday Times – Scottish Edition)

'Irvine has also become quite the figurehead for Scottish tourism' Aberdeen Press & Journal

'Apart from a clever structure and the highest journalistic standards, this book is a joy. The clever thing about such opinionated copy is that pretty soon one picks up the character of the writer, and thus can get a much more accurate and tactile impression of a place than from so-called even handed reports. This book can only enhance the pleasure of visiting or living in Scotland'

I've bought Pete Irvine's 'Scotland the Best' four or five times over the last ten years and recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting to know Scotland better.

It's quirky and independent and the author has a keen insiders eye for detail and obviously writes with authority and passion. I use the book whether on day trips or longer breaks and it's come up trumps on many occasions from cafes/ bars in the big cities to little family run hotels in the highlands and islands. The beach walks section is spot on.

Keep up the good work.

Could do better 27 Dec 2011
By Quiverbow TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
In any travel guide, I guess the first thing anyone does is turn to the pages of the places with which they're familiar. I did just that and unfortunately found something that summed up this book for me. A map of the country gives a reference number for each entry, from 1 - 2308, and is quickly found within the text, which is one of the problems with this. It might be me, but I prefer my guides to be regional. Edinburgh and Glasgow have their own section, which is understandable, and there is a regional hotels and restaurant section, but the rest is all over the place. As an example, The Rhins (Dumfries and Galloway) has a dozen entries between numbers 761 and 1989, whilst North Berwick has eleven entries ranging between 454 and 2070. Not only that, but Tobermory, and other places on the island of Mull, are mentioned at various junctures, yet the island itself has its own section toward the end of the book where many entries are repeated. What a waste of space and time!

`Scotland the Best' is also incredibly top heavy on where to eat and drink. Such places take up 40 pages in the Edinburgh section, yet those of a 'what to see' interest warrants a mere ten. Yes, sustenance is important, but do people really visit that city, or anywhere else in Scotland, simply because there are numerous places to eat? I don't think so. If I wanted to know where to stuff my face, I'd buy something by Egon Ronay. However, the two things that knocked this book a few notches down from where it could have been is in the use of kilometres, and a glaring error in one entry. When compiling this guide, how many distance signs did the authors see that were in metric? The road signs on the A716 from Logan Botanical Gardens DO NOT say Stranraer is 16km, nor does it say that Sandhead is 2km away. We use miles and yards here! (Imagining Judith Chalmers enthusing about the, "kilometres of sandy beaches" just doesn't sound right.) The error is with the twice-listed Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel. It has `fine food' in the first entry but `only ok food' in the other. Which is it? Is it an error, or did two different people visit? If the author cannot decide whether their cooking will make either your taste buds dance or get you acquainted with the lavatory, why should anyone believe his opinion on anything else? Mistakes like that should not occur.

Whilst everything in here is subjective, there's no mention of the world famous `Bridge over the Atlantic' that connects the island of Seil to the mainland, and the absence of the World Stone Skipping Championships (held each September on Easdale Island) in the `Best Annual Events' section is criminal.

Effectively a book of lists - best restaurants, best hotels, best parks, best cafes, most interesting museums, graveyards, parks - the list is enormous. It gives only a brief description of each item but enough information to locate and decide on whether to visit.
A few maps and a handful of pictures in the middle, but primarily text - because there is so much content to get into this book.

I have been visiting Dundee and the surrounding area for about 7 years on a regular basis and even I found interesting places and sights within this book that I wasn't aware of for that area.

Edinburgh and Glasgow have large section devoted to themselves, but all of Scotland is in here somewhere! You can find places via the extensive index or look at the maps - numbered codes point you to corresponding articles for that location.

The sections within the book are:
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Regional Hotels and Restaurants
Particular Places to Eat and Stay in Scotland
Good Food and Drink
Outdoor Places
Historical Places
Strolls, Walks and Hikes
Outdoor Activities
Consuming Passions
The Islands

A fabulous and recommended guide book.
