This is by far the best single volume history of Scotland available. It is neither too scholarly and dry, nor sloppily populist. It was written fairly recently (unlike similar works) and appears to be in touch with modern scholarly thinking. It is a miracle of condensation but information does not come too fast to overwhelm the reader. If there was any justice this book would sell by the bucketloads.

I found this to be a great help in my first year studying Scottish History at University and have hung onto it as a quick reference guide.

I bought this book when it was first published and still refer to it. It is a nearly ideal one volume history of Scotland and a great stepping stone to more in depth study. I cannot recommend it too highly
