Product Description

Review

This is a book whose author obviously has a deep love for Scotland and equally obviously knows it intimately. ...the book is certainly comprehensive, but the overall physical size has been kept to a minimum, with added durability coming from the hard covers. As a result you have a comprehensive guide to the Highlands and islands which is almost pocket sized, and certainly rucksack pocket sized. In terms of contents, everything you might expect, want or need is here, from travel to food and drink, and from wild camping to Internet access. Most of the book is given over to sections about geographical regions, in which information is keyed into adequate maps of areas, islands and some towns, supplemented by a full colour mini atlas of the whole country. The approach adopted in the body of the book carries over from the introduction quoted above. Alan Murphy has a style that reads well, and while the fairly condensed conveyance of facts is inevitably a constraint, the author's approach adds much to the experience of finding out what you need to know: or browsing through the book while simply looking for ideas. --Undiscoveredscotland.co.uk --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Scotland Highlands & Islands Handbook (Footprint Scotland Highlands & Islands Handbook)
I purchased this book for a May 2009 trip to the North and North West Highlands of Scotland (Loch Lomand and Loch Ness). This book is a definite must for any visitor, it is very readable, has great long and short visit itinerary recommendations, history and accommodation / restaurants for all budgets. I do recommend it and will be using it again to plan future trips to the Highlands.

If you like guidebooks with lots of colour photos, this may not be the one for you. But if you like well-organised, accessible, easy to read, detailed commentary that is of direct practical use for your trip, then buy this. The descriptions are clear, succinct and to the point, with lots of useful additions covering related web-sites and all you would expect to find in relation to accommodation, eating, shopping, activities etc. etc. If you like lots of photos to get a feel of the place, you might want to supplement this with other books, but this is the one to take with you.
