That situation is about to be remedied with the publication of "Scotland: An Encyclopedia of Places and Landscape", edited by Dr David Munro, Director of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. This authoritative, comprehensive gazetteer will include over 8,000 entries on cities, towns and villages, mountains, lochs and rivers, visitor attractions and monuments throughout the nation. Each entry places its subject in an appropriate historical, geological or environmental context, providing essential information of interest to a wide range of potential users. The book starts with an introductory essay on the Landscapes of Scotland. There is also an extensive glossary of terms (including Gaelic words incorporated into many place names), and a detailed bibliography. Street plans are provided for over 100 main towns and cities, as are maps of each administrative area, spread throughout the book. There is a fully indexed full-colour atlas, providing a wealth of extra cartographic information.
About the Author
Dr David Munro has been the Director of the RSGS since 1996, having formerly been a member of the Department of Geography at Edinburgh University. His previous published works include the Oxford Dictionary of the World, the Chambers World Gazetteer and the Hutchinson Guide to the World. The project was conceived in 1995 by Dr Munro with Bruce Gittings of the University of Edinburgh.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but, i'm pleased to say, it's everything I was hoping for and more! I have a passionate interest in Scottish history and architecture and the information presented in this book satisfies my want for this information....from tiny hamlets to big cities.
The maps inside are really interesting and help put the content into context. This book is bringing back the proud Scottish tradition of Gazetteers and I look forward to more books being released on the same theme! As far as i know, there is nothing comparable to this book available today.

I don't usually post reviews, but felt compelled when I read a review from [...]. I bought this as a Christmas present for my folks, but after reading a few pages I couldn't hand it over. It's a great book with loads of info, on the most interesting places, from the highlands to the borders. Despite being a reference book, it's very readable. A few more pictures wouldn't go a miss, but great value!

A very useful book. I've looked up several places that interest me (large and small) and it has as much detail as could reasonably be expected to be squeezed in - much more complete than anything else published recently. I found it up-to-date with no sign of mistakes.
The reviewer who said he found things missing was being rather harsh - the authors must have taken years on this and would have been shooting at a moving target. Photos would have been nice but on balance divert from its purpose as a reference book. Photos however are availble on the website. Very happy with this on my bookshelf and happy to recommend to others.
