Book Description

1 May 2010
As the proud possessors of a fiercely independent creative heritage, the Scots were a race apart even before Hadrian built the wall. Scotland has produced an indomitable bunch of fighters, builders, thinkers and drinkers, poets, players and pedagogues that have shaped the course of modern history. "Scotland: 1,000 Things You Need To Know" is the real McCoy, a comprehensive guide to Caledonia and its remarkable people.

Review

'Entertaining and scholarly - he writes like a Scottish Bill Bryson' The Courier 'A small, cheerful book... A valiant attempt to navigate the more trivial contours of enlightenment and clearances, crown and parliament, dirt and deity... In a different league to the Scottish novelty titles that get stocked next to the bookstore tills' Sunday Times

Review

`It's a great wee book'

'Well crafted and witty'

'What's the connection between Homer Simpson and Larbert, and why are generations of lawyers grateful to a Paisley snail? Author Edwin Moore has gathered 1000 facts like these about Scotland in a quirky new book.'

entertaining and eclectic collection of facts( its all true , honest...) and patter which will strike a chord with nostalgic Scots at home and abroad, and introduce the visitor to the dramatic landscape and diverse passions of this proud and ancient nation, from eloquent insults ( a face like a burst couch )to fine literature , from battles fought to famous football victories, to food and whisky , movies and folklore.
An ideal gift for those with Scottish connections in this Homecoming year.

The book is excellent and does all it promises. The facts are fascinating and there are far more of them than one would ever think of.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uneducated 14 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
Definitely not a reference book as there are a few historical inaccuracies. Unashamedly biased towards a unionist Britain. The author unbelievably dismisses 'The Declaration of Arbroath' as just another document. What an eejit!
