Book Description

6 July 2010
Who are you? a voice said. Why, I'm Marmalade the mischievous cat and I live in the forest with all my friends. Meet Marmalade! Set in the stunning Scottish Highlands amongst the lochs and the snow-capped mountains, take Marmalade's paw and go on an adventure with him in this warm, uplifting story for young readers. For Marmalade, just like yourselves, growing up can be a sticky business, and he often finds himself in trouble. But with help from his friends, Marmalade begins to learn important life lessons along the way. Sometimes, he goes too far with his pranks. When he paints the birds feathers in rainbow colours or when he ties the mice tails together, you might find it funny, but like Marmalade, you will see that it is not so funny for those animals that he teases! Whenever his adventures get out of hand, the little people of Scottish Folklore are there to help him. You will all have a friend like Marmalade, or do you want to be like him even? So, laugh along the way, learn along the way and let the journey begin!

What a delightful, and sensitive way to open children's eyes to the world. The stories are magical and make vivid mental pictures, but have their roots in everyday life. They are moral and educational without preaching, and there is a lot of fun, as the animals form relationships.I also liked the progression of stories through the seasons; it gives an overall logical shape to the book which children will enjoy.
What a good idea to summarise the stories at the beginning, so that parents and children can choose which one to read according to their mood, if they don't wish to read in sequence, and what a lovely way to avoid an abrupt ending to a book, by including a recipe and an interesting glossary.
This book will last from the day parents read it to their children, through to the days when children will read it to themselves, probably over and over again.

SCOTCH MARMALADE is both a beautiful and traditional story of friendship and growing up with plenty of modern themes. Marmalade is an adorable, mischievous cat that will be adored by childern and adults alike.
Every primary school should stock one as it incorporates themes such as citizenship, multicultural festivals, scottish traditions and even loss of a loved one, in a sensitive and simple way. It is pitched at 6+ years which I think is perfect.
It is suitable to be read to younger children in school or as a bedtime story, or also stands alone for young readers who are flying on their own! Each chapter is a stand alone story which are perfect in length for bedtime or storytime. The whole book follows the same bunch of characters those being Marmalade and his woodland friends, so this make the children want to go on the next adventure with their pals.
With the trend at the moment to make books for young readers as gruesome as possible, this story reminds us that there is always space for beautifully written and well told enchanting stories.
All children will identify with Marmalade and laugh and learn with him along the way.
A fabulous read !

A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
Scotch Marmalade is a charming, sensitive and informative book. It explores life in a gentle way through the eyes of a delightful cat but is not just for cat lovers. All chcildren will fall in love with Marmalade and his adventures.

Well suited for reading to younger children or those able to read on their own.

Each chapter having a different adventure makes it ideal for cosy bedtime stories.

I can see this one being a firm favourite and in use for many years.

The recipe at the end of the book is a lovely surprise and simple enough to encourage children to have a go with the help of a parent.

Hope there will be further adventures of Marmalade in the future.
