Although Southern Africa is one of the best places on earth to see and study scorpions, little information is generally available on these misunderstood and often persecuted creatures. "Scorpions of Southern Africa" is both a field guide to the identification of the more common and visible of Southern Africa's rich fauna of 130 scorpion species and a description of the physiology and ecology of scorpions. It dispels myths that portray scorpions as deadly venomous animals to be killed on sight, and offers an intriguing insight into the amazing adaptations that have enabled scorpions to survive over millions of years. Layman's terms are used as far as possible, and a glossary of more complicated terminology is provided. Distribution maps and photographs are given for over 50 Southern African species as well as practical information about where to look for scorpions and how best to handle these often feared creatures.
About the Author
Jonathan Leeming was born in the village of Ravenshead, England, and was encouraged by his parents from an early age to love and respect the natural world. After immigrating to South Africa in 1984, he joined the Spider Club of Southern Africa and the African Arachnological Society. Southern African scorpions have since been his passion and absorbing interest. He has given many public lectures and led field trips, and has acted as a consultant on film documentaries and TV programmes and for various publications.

No sting in the tale,

When it comes to a field-guide to scorpions in Southern Africa you really can't get any better than this book. All of the main families are described, along with their habitat, habits and more than enough information to identify a specimen that you might find while out in the bushveld. A useful and interesting book to have to hand if you're going to be staying in the southern African bush for any period of time.
