A Good UNDERWORLD Score Again from Haslinger 2 Mar 2012
By P. O'Rourke - Published on Amazon.com

I rated this 5 stars because it's a good score for the Underworld films and compliments the movie well. If you're a fan of the series and a fan of Haslinger's previous work on the series, then you'll undoubtedly enjoy this. Nice album art as well.

Standard Action Fare With Some Interesting Textures 1 Mar 2012
By Kaya R. Savas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Paul Haslinger composed the first Underworld back in 2003. The second film was taken over by Marco Beltrami, but Haslinger returned for the next two films. Yes if you're counting that makes 4 Underworld films. How and why this has happened is beyond me. I guess they tailor to the same crowd as the Resident Evil films, which is hitting its fifth installment this fall. For this outing we stay in familiar territory with Haslinger's electronic infused soundscape.

The music for Underworld: Awakening has some interesting textures every now and then, but it mostly stays in the brooding agression stage. The second half of the album is where things start to pick up in terms of pacing and action. Here we get some fun action music. The score feels very 90's to me, and I mean that in a good way. The ever escalating tracks with moments of rising tension that explode make it fun. The score does take itself seriously though, and it works. I was never bored with the music, but I wasn't very thrilled by it either. It functions exactly as it was meant to, and you can't ask for much more in a drawn out series like this one.

If you're looking for Haslinger's pure inspiration for this series I would rewind back to the first Underworld. At this point he's running through the motions and can only do so much with what's given to him. I found lots of the electronic textures to be interesting and everything meshes well. Structurally the score isn't perfect, but that's more of a reflection of the film the score is fitting to. Underworld: Awakening is worth a listen especially if you're a fan of Haslinger or the series overall.
a score of pads and effects 28 May 2012
By Chuck Wagner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I did not buy the soundtrack, but in watching the movie, "Underworld Awakening", there was not, in my opinion, one discernible theme throughout the "score". I personally do not regard sample CD soundscapes and softsynths as being music composition.

In defense of the composer, he may well have been asked to provide effects and "soundscapes" rather than actual scored music, but if such is the case, more could have been sought on the part of the film company.

Nonetheless, I have become of the conclusion based on much more than this particular soundtrack that the term "film score" no longer means that tangible orchestration is a pre-requisite for one to be a composer in this era's film industry, which is a disappointment to me and is further indicative of an overall lowering of standards relating to the discipline.

Metaphorically, when I see a red line having been painted on a white canvas, I wonder if the artist could actually paint a landscape or a portrait.

Suffice to say there is a real shortage of Bernard Herrmanns these days.
